I notice you use a military-type sling. I was under the impression that if you slung yourself up you changed the point of impact without a one-piece stock.

Wow, aside from the lever thingy and your Hammer, that looks EXACTLY like my rifle. I've got the same style sling, the same elastic stock shell holder thingy, same everything. Is it a pre-64?
And what is that lever-wrap suposed to do anyway?

It's a 1974 model.
The lever wrap saves your knuckles! :)
Like the Pachmayer recoil pad? :) I love it!

The recoil pad is awsome! I feel sorry for those guys out there with the steel butt-plate...
I'm not sure if the recoil pad on mine was something that came with the gun or if it was added latter. The gun was a gift from my grandmother, she gave it to me about 10 years ago to use as a deer gun (I was about 11 or 12 at the time). It was made in the 50's, and I'm not sure but I think she bought it new and had it sitting around for all those years. I don't think it saw much use because it still looks and shoots like a new rifle :)

Mine was 'gifted' to me by my father for some work I did for him. That and he really likes his Yugo SKS now! :D He bought it off a guy at Minot AFB in 1975. It hasn't seen 500 rounds yet. Probably around 250 actually.
He said he had a gunsmith add the recoil pad on many years ago. LIke twenty or more. He's taken a couple deer with it in the badlands. It makes an awesome brush gun. A friend of mine has a 1976 model with an ugly blond stock and no recoil pad. And it has really crappy sights. I love the sights on this one. I'll never sell it.
Oh yeah, the hammer thing is also an add-on. Really cool if you ask me. It's screwed onto the hammer. It clamps onto it. He had that put on at the same time. I don't know if it's pachmayer or who made it, but if you want to know, I'll dig it out again.

Dumb question? I've never seen a lever wrap. Is it there to protect your hand?

It helps to keep the skin on your knuckles if you shoot it alot or for rapid fire.

Gotta a lot of 'cool factor but not much practical value in a real world. How long does it take to reload that thing from the butt cuff? Think I will stick with my "Tactical" M1A. :D

The tactical advantage of the lever gun is the tube magazine, so you can "shoot one, load one". Stay topped off. Hard to do that with a box magazine.

Hm. Was unfamiliar with the Power Point Plus (http://www.winchester.com/ammunition/store/cfrproductsheet.aspx?symbol=SHV30306&qrystr=Y2FydGxpc3QrQUQwLU16QXRNekFnVjJsdVkyaGxjM1JsY2crQUNVLTNkK0FDVS0zZCtBQ1ktdXNlbGlzdCtBRDAtbm9uZStBQ1ktYnJhbmRsaXN0K0FEMC1ub25lK0FDWS1idWxsZXR0eXBlK0FEMC1ub25l) ammo. Interesting.
For me, a Tactical .30-30 needs only have receiver peep sights, a butt cuff w/ spare ammo, and a sling. A recoil pad is nice, I guess, but an action and trigger job is better. :)

That's a fine-looking rifle! Very nice!
Actually, the rifle IS practical value. It's light, fast-handling, ammo is found even at gas stations in rural areas that haven't even HEARD of .308, no magazines to need/lose, plenty of wallop to settle various and sundry hashes--corned beef and otherwise and been settling that hash for 139 years for levers and 100 for .30-30, and all at---what---1/4 the cost of an M1A. Plus, it'll sit on the back seat of a Jeep with room to spare. Easy to tote, legal all over the country, and doesn't set off a sheeple stampede when they see it. Practical value? Why, I think I need one my own self and that ain't no bull!
You got a fine rifle there, Wondernine. Sure tempts a man to get one his own self.

I've been into handguns for a while...shot a few .22 rifles and started thinking about a centerfire long-gun. A buddy gave me a Winchester '94 a few weeks ago and...I love it! It's approximately 80 years young(!). He took a lot of deer with it....I am not a hunter, but the Old West factor as well as it's overall ease of use and maint. makes it a great "1st centerfire rifle" for me.
Are there more "tactical," "powerful," "newer" long-guns? Yes...but, for some, this is a huge piece of Americana!
P.S. Being a newbie, I picked up a recoil pad at WallyWorld...call me a wuss!:neener:

Dad's rifle refinished in matte blue.
The receiver turned out a bronze/olive green. It looks good in 'real' life vs. the internet.
Not very noticeable in the pic is the hooded front sight.
The Lyman tang sight just had to go on this gun.
The Ram-Line stock wasn't very easy to install, I hear from the guy who refinished the rifle for me.
With a buttstock ammo cuff and leather shoelace wrapped around the large loop lever, this is about as 'tactical' a .30-30 I'm likely to build.
It was fun, and the gun was saved from oblivion.

What brand of butt cuff is that? I haven't seen any that hold 9 rounds.
WonderNine
June 28, 2003, 11:30 AM
It's made by Allen. I bought it at the gunshop. Strange because most of the stock cuffs that I've seen hold 9, but some hold 5 or 6. It was on the rack next to some Uncle Mike's ones that also hold 9. They look absolutely identical except for price, the Allen was $6.99 and the UM's was $9.99 so I bought the Allen.
I just looked at the hammer extension and it says "WILLIAMS" on the top if anybody is interested in one. I don't know if they make them anymore as it's twenty years old.

Where can one find the lever wrap?
I have a similar set-up. Marlin 336, butt cuff, Ashley ghost-ring sights.
Have you tried the hollow-points from Federal and Winchester?

One other thing the lever wrap does is retain moisture and rust the lever.

That's enough to change my mind. I'll get some gloves. Thanks! :D

I hear that everytime, but has anybody actually seen this happen?
