Glock 23, should I?

My dealer has a nice used Glock 23 for sale. Made about 1992 (so it's hi-cap eligible for those who have to worry about that) for a New England Nuclear Power Plant guard force. Has a New York Trigger set at about 8 lbs that feels pretty good. I already have two G19's and a G21. The price is about average for Massachusetts, which is to say a bit high. But we aren't getting any new ones so what we have is what we are limited to.

I personally think it's Glock's best all-around package. Big enough to shoot easily, small enough to tote. 13 rounds in a compact size and a bore diameter that starts with "four". Good combination of attributes, which may be why I owned five of the things over the years and used one as my primary carry gun for almost seven years...

I have a Glock 23 from that time period and agree with Tamara that it's Glocks best all-around package. Its the gun I always take hiking with me when I get the chance, which isn't often enough, due to its weight, capacity and durability. I prefer my Sig 229 in .40 for pleasure shooting but the Glock 23 is hard to beat for the qualities mentioned previously.

Sounds like a good addition to your collection.

I have always been impressed by how much bang the G23 is in such a small package. If Glocks did not point so high for me I might still be carrying mine.
Even though I never carry it anymore I'm definitely holding onto mine.:)

If I was looking for someone to talk me OUT of this fine firearm I guess I came to the wrong place! :D

I think I call him tomorrow and put it on layaway. Thanks for all the input!

By all means get it. I just returned from the range where I shot my G23 and G23C. Great pistols!

As far as high cap mags go, it doesn't matter when your pistol was made - it's when the magazine was made.

I recommend you get an ISMI spring and recoil rod for it. The G23 will benefit from a stronger spring.

Yup....as fine a group of enablers as you are likely to find!

Look elsewhere for self control!

Good choice; but I don't care for the New York trigger!:( :uhoh:
I had one with that type of set-up a few years ago,
and ended up trading it for a car~

The 23 is Glock's best performer. Only marginally greater recoil than the 19 with siginificantly greater knockdown power. Put some nite sights on it and you have the perfect carry gun.

Definitely go for it. The G23 is a great "little" Glock .40. Mine is about 12 years old now and still going strong, withthe original Trijicons too. Fantastic pistol, almost as good as my .40 Hi Power :neener: (that's saying a lot).

I think the G23 may be the best all-around carry gun on the market. It is fairly small and lightweight, absolutely reliable, and gives you 13+1 rounds of very potent ammo. Every trigger pull is the same and you don't have to fumble with a manual safety. It may not be pretty but it gets the job done, and is the choice of many CCW people who have tried everything else. I'd rather shoot a Sig P229, but I'd rather carry a G23.

Tom B,

How does the C shoot compared to the regular? I am particularly interested in ease of tracking front sight during recoil and shot to shot transitions.

I am thinking of picking up a 17C or 19C so I am doing some research..

thanks!!

The Glock 23 is my primary handgun for personal defense. I've rotated through different guns and calibers but I always seem to go back to the G23. I have yet to handle a gun that packs such a good punch into such a reliable, lightweight, compact, yet very controllable package. I'm not a big fan of the New York trigger but that's something that can be switched out easily. Not sure about the law concerning that in Mass though.

The 23C is great for fast follow-up shots and I have had no low light blindness issues. This was the second 23C I have owned. Now having said all that I just traded the 23C last week for a G20. I kept the other G23 that I have. Several weeks ago I was shooting the G23C at the range in slow fire with arm fully extended and I somehow got gas from the ports into my eye. I even had safety glasses on. It messed up my eye pretty badly for several days. The biggest reason I traded the 23c and kept the 23 was simply the 23 was more accurate(the luck of the draw). Both were third gen FXXXXX series. For the 9mm I would not get the C model. Not much improvement in fast follow-up and you want all the velocity you can get in that cal. Many times you will also run into cycle problems with cooler ammo in the 9mm Glock C models. This can be corrected by a weaker recoil spring but at additional cost of course. I suggest you go with a standard G19 if you want 9mm. Thats the best of ALL 9mm carry guns IMO. Of course if you do that you will have to change your handle to Island Glock! ;)

I don't think that a 9mm Glock has enough muzzle flip to make a "C" model worthwhile. It's natural home is on the 10mm G20C.

FPrice,

What do you mean by "hi cap eligible"?

They are all hi cap eligible.

That sounds like something a less than reputable dealer may have told you...

Get the G23! It is a very nice handgun. Reliable and accurate.

I have a Glock 23 that I purchased new in 1993. I just put Trijicon sites on it last month, and the gun seems new again. It is the perfect gun for concealed carry.

"What do you mean by "hi cap eligible"?"

I agree with you but there have been some LE in this state who interpret it otherwise. And there is nothing worse than an officer who is trying to enforce an erroneous interpretation of the law. You MAY win in the long run, but in the short run you may endure a lot of pain.

FPrice,

There is no "MAY" to it, you absolutely will win.

The .40 Glocks CAN explode since they CAN fire out of battery. Does it mean it will? No. A lot of agencies use the .40 Glock, but be aware that it can happen. One of my instructors was 4 feet away from a catastrophic failure of one of the .40s shooting factory ammo. If you don't believe me, do a search on the internet. Dean Speir has written on this subject.

Do I have anything against Glocks? No. I had carried a G23 for years and have conservatively 7000 + rounds through it. No problems, and I am a certified Glock armorer.

The best Glock is in 9 mm meaning it seems to have the least amount of problems.

YMMV

Tom B and Tamara:

Thanks much for the info!! I already have a G19 but the Beretta is the main girl.. I have heard so much about the 'Cs' I just thought some real world knowledge would be helpful..

Thanks again..:)

Did you?

Wow, talk about bringing up the past.

Well, I did end up with two G23's, and sold them both. I had a casehead separation with one using older, first generation Federal 180 gr HS. Both Federal and Glock treated me well, but I decided to go back to the G19 and also ended up getting a G26 which I like a lot. I don't "bad-mouth" the G23, I just feel it's not for me.

Solid; reliable; and powerful. With that said I can't shoot it worth crap. Some people flock to the 40 some don't. I believe theres a better 40 cal then the Glock offerings, in either Sig or Hk. But in truth you can't go wrong.

The G23 is by far and away my absolute favorite carry Glock. I (due to my dress requirements at work) do not get to carry my G23 NEARLY as much as I wish I could but I absolultely love mine. I am a big fan of .40 S&W to begin with the and G23 size is just perfect. If it wasnt the G23, it would be the G32 in .357sig (same frame) or the G19 in 9mm (also same frame).

Good luck!

EDIT TO ADD....holy crap, I didnt realize how old this thread was and I didnt bother reading all the comments before I posted mine.
