What are some good safe dehumidifers that people have had success with. Is it necessary to have on in TN?

I'm still using the same Golden Rod that I bought in 1986. I live in an area with fairly high humidity and haven't had a problem with rust. Highly recommend the Golden Rod.

in a sock and it seems to work great, silica gel on the cheap.

Just a reminder, golden rod doesnt remove acutal moisture. Goldenrod is heating element that moves air around, hot air rises, so moisture won't condense and rust parts.
You should combine two, silica (certain type of Tidy cat) and golden rod for maximun effectiveness.

The GoldenRod requires the container to be ventilated to keep the air moving and drive the moisture out, either with holes in the top and bottom of the safe or just by relying on the crack around the door. In my experience with a safe in a very damp unfinished basement, the big silica packs saturated in less than a week even with the GR in there. I tossed them and stuck with just a GR and haven't had a bit of trouble over the years. I suppose the silica packs would work in a closed container, but I've never tried it. I own 3 GRs.
"How GoldenRod Works GoldenRodŽ heats to a surface temperature of less than 150° F (which is almost too warm to hold) and circulates warm, dry air throughout an enclosure on a 24 hour basis. This increases the temperature of the air inside to several degrees above the ambient outside temperature. Expansion of the heated air forces the moist air outside through the vents or loose fitting doors leaving the dry air inside." - www.drytheair.com/xcart/store/catalog/product_16150_18_GoldenRod_Dehumidifier_18_Watts.html
