I am considering doing this guys as I sold the 1911 I had and have missed it ever since. I looked at a new rollmarked colt 1991 and fell in love with it (which isn't hard as the 1911 is my favorite gun). But I figure I have 3 other great 9mm's a browning hi power,a glock 17 and a glock 26. I don't really use the beretta for ccw much due to its size,the 1991 on the other hand is very thin and its weight can be countered by using a good gun belt and holster.

My problem is I am currently unemployed and really want a NRM colt 1991 any help you guys can give in this decision would be great. Also any pros or cons with this would be great to,FWIW I would sell the beretta privately to get what its worth as a dealer would reem me on it. thanks for any help.

I sure wouldn't! I guess it depends on what you want the Colt for though. If you are thinking about target shooting with it and you have money to spend for after market work, the Colt would be a good place to start. I think you will regret getting rid of the Beretta. Sounds like you have three of the best 9mms on the market, you should keep them all. Get rid of a lesser gun if you have one. Any Hi-Points or Kel-Tecs in your collection?:D

I may be the wrong one to ask because I like Berettas & prolly would never sell one of mine. If you really have to sell or trade one to buy one, sell one of your Glocks since you have 2 of them ;)

I suppose you use the G26 for carry. What do you like better, the Beretta or the Glock 17? Pick your favorite and sell the other if you must have the 1911.

Also keep in mind that ammo for the 1911 is going to be double+ .

I'd rather have a 1991 than a Beretta, but at the same time you're gonna take a beating on value if you sell the Beretta to anybody but a private party.

I'd rather have a Beretta over a 1911, but sounds like you want it plenty. Is the Beretta a pretty run of the mill dilleo or something special? If there's nothing special about it (i.e. made in the US, hasn't been blessed by Ernest Langdon, etc.) I wouldn't mind ditching it, but they don't go for much on the used market either.

Normally I would recommend that you dump the Beretta ASAP and join the wonderful world of the 1911.

However since you are unemployed, put your dreams of a 1911 on hold for awhile and keep the Beretta. 1911's are not as economical to shoot as 9mm and if you get the 1911 customizing illness you could spend hundreds of dollars adding stuff to a 1911. Keep your Beretta for now. Shop for a 1911 when you get back to work.

It's not like it'd be real hard to track down another 92 in the future, should the urge hit and the finances improve. When you're not exactly rolling in dough and you've got the new gun jones, trading is often the only way to make it happen. I always make it a point to know which are my most expendable guns.

Heck, to me, horse-trading is half the fun of collecting. :)

Althought I'm a die-hard 1911 fan, the B-92 is a good pistol. I had
one of the early ones and never had so much as a short return to
battery failure...whether it was dirty or clean. It shot great,
functioned perfectly, and felt good in my oversized mitt. If your
Beretta is a pearl, I'd say hang on to it and save up for the Colt.
The Beretta that you replace it with may not be as good.

9mm isn't my choice caliber, but since it's so commonplace, it
makes sense to have a pistol around that will take the round.
Might as well have a good pistol in "nine"... and one that you're
already familiar with is a plus.

I'd sell the Beretta, but I'm not a fan of big guns in 9mm, DA/SA or Berettas in general. The only 9 mm I have is a G17 and it very rarely goes to the range. I got the G17 because I wanted a 9mm similar to the G21 I used to shoot. Both Glocks are in the back of my safe now. I went full circle and have returned to the 1911.

I prefer to have pistols with similar characteristics. A Glock, if you short reset the trigger has an almost single action feel. Even the first shot is better than the first shot of a DA/SA. Since you have two Glocks, maintaining familiarity with their feel will serve you well. So don't sell either Glock.

Likewise, no way would I sell the Browning Hi-Power, it's a classic. If it runs well, it's a very durable machine and you should keep it. If it doesn't run well, get it fixed. If i was buying a 9mm now instead of a few years ago, I'd be looking for a Hi-Power.

Assuming your B92 is an early no plastic model, I say keep it and save for the 1911. Colt is on the right track again, and good 1911's will be around a while. You may even find a used one for a deal if you wait.

That is true, I just looked at a new Beretta today and they've gone cheap on us. The trigger, guide rod, and even the safety lever were all made of plastic. Your all-metal 92 might actually go up in value in the coming years.

I would hang onto the Beretta and just wait to get the Colt. Who knows, when things are going better for you, you can get your Colt, and send your Beretta to Ernie Langdon for some tweaking.

Well 10-ring i've decided to keep my beretta 92fs and simply buy a NRM colt 1991 when the funds allow. As much as I want another 1911 to replace the one I sold I don't want to sell my beretta to get it,plus I don't like the fact beretta is now using plastic on the new 92's either. All of your replies have been very helpful in my decision though,come to think of it I bought a browning hi power because it is very 1911ish and in my prefered caliber 9mm.

That being said I love the 1911 for its great design and strong historical value. I plan on carrying my new colt 1991 when I get it I prefer the 1911 but its not even a caliber thing it a love of the design thing,i simply love the 1911. That having been said I feel the 9mm perfectly adiquite for self defense and having a BHP I can cross train on it so to speak if ammo cost becomes a concern with the 1911. thanks again to all of you for your replies.

I have no interest in the Berretta and the 1911 is the ultimate handgun in my opinion. BUT............ I wouldn't sell the Beretta or any other gun you own to buy one. Just be patient. You will get back to work and you will eventualy be able to buy a 1911 and you will still have everything else besides. Enjoy what you have, prosperity is right around the next bend in the road.
Let this experience be a lesson to you. You sold your last 1911 and now regret it. AND you arn't in a position to replace it. The lesson is:

My thoughts exactly 444 I've resigned to not sell anymore guns. Besides it always cost you more because you always wind up buying another of the make/model you sell.

On the other hand, a regular barter routine gives you the chance to get thorough hands-on experience with a lot of different guns. By the time you come back around to re-buying models you once had, you already know you like it, especially in comparison to other models. Consider the whatever loss in trade-in value as an extended rental fee.

Still, I think you did the right thing. :)

I think you did the right thing in waiting. First, you already sold one gun you liked for another and regretted it so why sell another gun you like for another- you'll simply end up missing the Beretta. Second, you have no idea how long you'll be unemployed so why spend the cash you'll need to come up with above and beyond the trade to get the 1911. Third, as already said, if money is tight right now you'll probably be shooting a lot more 9mm anyway as it is much cheaper so you may as well wait on the 1911 until the finances are better.

I've sold several guns and regretted it, however I'm not in the "never sell a gun" camp. If it is a gun you don't really like, or that doesn't work for you for some other reason, sure sell it or trade it on something better. However, unless you need to sell to pay your bills I am in the "never sell a gun you like and use" camp. Especially don't sell a gun you like and shoot for another gun simply so you can afford the new gun.

Hmmmmm. I just traded my 92 Inox on a Hi Power a couple of weeks ago. No regrets, the Beretta and I just didn't seem to get along. I'm all for trading or selling guns that I'm not accurate with or don't enjoy.

As to the argument about never selling guns..... I'd heartily disagree. In fact I've recently introduced a couple of friends to shooting when I sold off a handful of pistols. I know the pistols are going to good homes, and I'm increasing the support base for RKBA.

i know this is an old post, but i had to chime in. i sold my 10 y/o beretta that had functioned FLAWLESSLY 10 yrs. all so i could have another colt pistol. i have not regretted my decision at all!!!! :)

Like other's, I have become a 1911 fan again; but I can't see selling or
trading the Beretta 92 to finance the 1911 purchase! Been there, and
done that my friend; and I always find myself reverting back to the gun
I got rid of.

Even if you sell the Beretta on a private party sale, you will still need to
come up with a few extra $$$$ to bring home the Colt! Something to
think about, in my way of thinking. Good Luck~

Why on earth would you consider selling one of the best semi-auto pistol the world has ever known? The 1911 is a good pistol as well but it doesn't compare to the Beretta as a combat pistol. The beretta holds 15+ rds of potent 9mm and it is one of the most reliable designs ever made. You have a great gun, why get rid of something so perfect?

Because they never had to install a "Slide Capture Device" in a 1911.
