I noticed in the post down below about Cowboy Action and barrel length that a few people are using Ruger Blackhawks. What is the downside or handicaps for using the adjustable sighted gun? It seems to me it would be the way to go so one can "adjust the gun for the loads" rather than the reverse. Thanks in advance, Bill

you are limited as to the catagories you can shoot in.If under a certain age then you must shoot in the modern catagory.I thnk those who are old enough to shoot in 49'er and above can shoot any weapon regardless of sights.
thus if you wanted to shoot in Classic Cowby with spurs/chaps/neckerchief etc,you could not.

You can wear the spurs, chaps, etc., all you want while shooting modern. You just can't shoot in the classic category.

If I were to saddle up, jam a Stetson on, and take a 1911 out and run the old mounted pistol course, would it be "cowboy action shooting"? How about if I wear a Gunsite hat and comfortable Wal-Mart $9.95 athletic shoes?

How about a BHP, Glock, or GP-100?

Off an ATV, which is getting to be the mount of choice in these parts?

Decisions, decisions.

Dienekes,
A Ruger Blackhawk is a far cry from a 1911. Really now, come on!!

Dienekes, if you really have questions about SASS/CAS you can go to www.sassnet.com and click on "shooters handbook".

Cynics aside, you can shoot a 1911 at Cowboy matches if they are running a Wild Bunch match. We have an open category at all of our matches that you can shoot Wild Bunch.

1911, Winchester 97 & pistol caliber lever/slide action.

I have shot Blackhawks in CAS for 7 years. I much prefer them.

I don't know that a 1911 would be that much help. We have had Cops and Cowboy matches for the last 2 years. The best cop, who happens to be a professional shooter and is really fun to watch because he is so good, wins, but it is close. The next cop, using Glocks, AR-15s and Remington 870s and Benelli shotguns was 30th last year.

Several of the posters above are correct, it really depends on the category you want to shoot. For the revolvers with adjustable sites, there is the "modern" category, which is the catch all category of SASS.

I shot with my .44 Magnum Ruger Super Bisley Blackhawk Hunter this past match (minus the scope). It has a 7.5 inch barrel. Throw in some .44 Russian and you are talking about a nice light shooting revolver that still has some punch.

What does shooting "modern" really mean, for the shooter? Does it limit who I compete with or the courses of fire, or is it a change in the way scoring is done?

I realize different matches at different clubs may do things differently (kinda hard to get picky if only 6 people show up...).

No, it does not limit you. You shoot the same course everyone shoots but you are scored against people in your category so you would be competing against other modern shooters. Of course there is still the match overall winner which can come from any category.

Modern is where a lot of new shooters start because many people already have Blackhawks with adjustable sights. I've seen a lot transition into other categories after they know they enjoy the sport and are willing to drop the money on a new set of "authentic" wheel guns.

Edit to add: In CAS you are always scored against other people in your category. If you shoot Traditional, 49ers, Frontier Cartridge or any other group. It's not exactly fair to expect cap-n-ball guys to compete with traditional shooters.

YosemiteSam357, I'm surprised you don't ask that question over on the SASS wire where you have been posting. Perhaps you should download the handbooks and after reading them ask your questions.

Hey Cane,

Yeah, I'm all over the place. ;) I don't want to bother the folks over on SASSwire too much with my dumb/newbie questions; I might wear out my welcome...

P.S. I don't suppose I can convince anyone that my .30-30 is a "pistol caliber" rifle, can I? I mean, you can get a T/C in .30-30! :D
