The rifle in the attachment has had all the bluing stripped and is now polished steel. It looks good, but I don't like the way the stock looks. I was palnning on painting it black, but before I do I had some questions.

Is there some kind of way I can use bondo or something similar to mold parts of the stock into a certain style, then sand and paint? What I thought would be fun to try would be to create a full style stock like an m1 or like an m14 style. I would also need to make it detachable somehow so I can get the action out of the stock. Basically just cover the top of the barrel with wood. Is there any way to do this?

How do you propose keeping that bare polished steel rust free?

No need for bondo and all that other crap to assemble a wood handguard.

I've used it quite a bit to fit my match pistol stocks. Easy to work with and quick. You can sand and paint. Rough up the surface before applying of course.

How do you want to change the stock?

If it were me I'd want to remove that grip carving pronto, strip off the finish, and apply a nice matte oil finish and leave it at that.

I was gonna give it away so it gave me something to do with it. I like the silver and black look. I still gotta polish the mag tho.

Old thread I know, but I need some more help. I've decided Once again to change the way the stock is. I'n my first post i asked about bondo and basically solved the question I was asking about creating a full style stock with bondo. I also stripped the stock to bare wood.


What i need help with is the finish of the stock. I'm trying to get the look of how m1 carbines and all those old military guns have that dark wood. I don't know if it's a stain, then laquer or some kind of oil that is rubbed in but I'm curious as to how those stocks are treated to get that look and am wondering if I can duplicate it. I'm also curious what the best type of paint is to put on the bondo piece (not auto paint) and how I can attach and detach it without having it permanently fixed to the stock. I was thinking I could put some kind of sleeve so I can slide it over the barrel then lock it into the stock.

It seems to be a neat little project and I'm pleased so far. I like how it's not going to be recognizable but doesn't look bubbad either. Any help of the finishing appearance would be great. Thanks.

Looks like yo are trying to add a hand guard. Military rifles attach them with bands. As for the finish, military rifles used walnut, your Marlin probably has a birch stock. you would have to stain it dark and then apply poly to make it shine.

What kind of paint will ahfere best to the bondo?

Any quality paint should work. I suggest you prime it first.
