Virginia retaining fingerprints for CCW applicants?

I went to get fingerprinted for my concealed carry permit in Newport News, Virginia, and asked what happens to the 2 sets of fingerprints. The fingerprinter told me that one set gets sent to the FBI, the other to the VA State Police, both to run background checks on me.
Now here's where it gets interesting: I asked what happens to the fingerprints. She said the FBI keeps their set, and the VA STate Police set gets sent back to the NNPD -- where they keep it on file.
According to my reading of the Virginia Code, the NNPD is supposed to notify me that they have my prints back and that I can either request them back or tell them to destroy them.
Can anybody familiar with this tell me what I'm missing, before I write a letter to NNPD?
PS while getting fingerprinted, I had to listen to a lecture on how permit holders get into shootouts all the time with each other, and no "civilian" needs a permit because the police are there, yadda yadda yadda. I smiled and said my wife felt the same way, until there were 2 murders, 1 armed burglary, and 2 rapes in one week in Newport News -- and one of the rapes was after the woman blasted the rapist with a full can of pepper spray. Whatever you believe about concealed carry, you gotta admit that one round of .45 Hydrashock would have done more good than all those ounces of pepperspray.

I don't think you're missing anything.
I think the statute requires that they be destroyed.
And why the hell is Norfolk still fingerprinting?
Fairfax County stopped fingerprinting a long time ago.

Between the military service, Civil service and Multiple CCW's (VA,NY,PA,FL and Maine) My fingerprints are well documented.
I guess I don't freak over it anymore.

I requested, and got mine back from Arlington County. (For novelty purposes.) If I recall correctly, they were mailed a few weeks after I picked up my permit.

Yeah, I've been printed so damned many times now that it's a moot point, really.
But I think I'd still be pissed if any jurisdiction in Virginia were retaining the prints in violation of state law just because they feel like it.

It's Newport News, not Norfolk.
I think I'll write them and ask for my fingerprint cards back, and see how they respond. I'll keep you all updated.

I'm sure my fingerprints are out there somewhere in perpetuity.

Cool someone 5miles down the street from me!
I had mine done here in Hampton and the lady doing them said they would send me out a notice saying come get them within X amount of days or they will be destroyed.
I received the notice, but never picked them up.
There really is no reason for them to fingerprint you other then their own greddy department. They can get the max 50$ out of you if they do so.
The state does not care about the fingerprints after all you do not even need a permit to open carry.

Getting your fingerprint cards returned means nothing. If they really want to keep your prints on file all they have to do is scan them into their computer and send the cards back.
Edited to add: I guess if they've been checked by the FBI that's already been done!

I had to listen to a lecture on how permit holders get into shootouts all the time with each other, :what: :what: :what:
Sheesh, I guess I'm lucky the PRNJ won't give out permits, or other law abiding ccw holders would call me up and invite me to shootouts.:barf: :barf: :barf:

Hey! geek! I heard you just got your permit...yeah, well, me and the boys where gonna cap each other down near city hall, you want in?

arlington notified me that they would destroy my prints within 15 days of getting them back, unless i requested to get them back from them.
even in arlington, an anti's mecca in virginia, the sherriff's office didn't lecture me. in fact, they had a good laugh or two with me, joking about something or other, and the front desk lady was trying as hard as she could do push me through so i could get to the copy machine and the other desk before they closed... a deupty notarized my documents for me... the closest thing i got to a lecture was the deputy saying: "you be careful with tha gun now..." "absolutely" "all right" and a big smile and solid handshake.
edit: oh and get this, i walked into the courthouse forgetting abou tmy pocket knife, and they stop me at the metal detector. "oh s*** sorry guys i forgot" they say no problem, open up a ziploc bag, and hand me a ticket stub, and then let me on through. yes, that's right, I checked my weapon at the alrington county courthouse. i still can't believe it.

I didn't get one negative word here in my little liberal city in western VA, and never even had my fingerprints taken.
Newport News has a genuine interest in keeping you from having a permit. You might kill some of their criminal citizens while they attempt to victimize you!

Yeah, I don't feel unsafe in NN, but I feel safer with my pistol.
Best part is now my wife wants to get her permit! She didn't know I was carrying for entire first day, and she thought it was pretty cool and made her feel safer. Excuse to buy a new gun:D

Even the City of Richmond stopped fingerprinting, but they still charge the max of $50. My prints have been on file since 1967 when I applied for a summer job at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg Maryland. Didn't get it.
Getting my permit was about the easiest dealing I've had with the City in the past 30 years. I mailed the forms in and they sent me a letter when it was time to come and get it. I set the metal detector off going into City Hall because I had an empty soft pack of Marlboros in my parka. Oops. The counter clerk was friendly and took 5 minutes or so to go get my permit - probably a smoke break or something. I still don't see why they didn't mail it to me. Maybe they wanted to see me before they typed it up.
Not bad service from a city that requires individual permits for nearly any firearm sold in the city - one permit for the buyer and one for the seller - every single time. Good thing the gun stores are in the counties ;)
