Shotgun pistol for HD?

I don't think so but that is exactly when G&A (August issue) recently stated about the Judge, a .410 shotgun/.45 colt revolver.
I quote "There is no question that such a revolver loaded with .410s would be an excellent home-defense arm as, in the heat of the moment, all one would have to do is achieve a head hit to make any bad guy wish that he'd stayed home." All that from a 3" barrel revolver?? :scrutiny: This was based on hitting paper plates with #4 shot at 4 to 7 yards distance.

Sounds like it would do the job, doesn't it? Don't know about #4 though.

I'd shoot snakes with .410 and people with .45. That's just me.
If you simply must use .410, use 000 buck, it's supposed to be ok-ish on people.

I just read the same article. I liked the idea stated in the article of alternating .410 and .45 in the gun for a one-two punch.

Let me guess....
There's a full page, full color ad in that issue for that very product, right?
Further proof that my decision of 20 some years ago of ignoring any and all Peterson publications and others of that ilk was a good one.
45 in either configuration is a great defensive round. 410 is also when used in shotguns with proper ammo.
3 inches is not much barrel for getting stuff up to where velocity is sufficient for best performance.
IMO, this piece beats fang and claw but there's better delivery systems out there....

Just checked, no add for the Judge. The only Taurus add was a full-page full-color add for the pt1911.

Taurus makes the 410/45? Same deal, then. I really doubt the objectivity of the review....

I totally agree.
Even biased articles can have some truth in them, just realize them for what they are.
...achieve a head hit to make any bad guy wish that he'd stayed home
Even a .22 headshot would make a BG "wish he stayed home".

I've got a 10 inch 45/410 contender barrel, kinda fun toy but....
accuracy from the 45 is marginal at best. I'm thinking that has alot to do with the jump to the lands.
Patterning of the 410 makes it pretty pathetic on clays out past 25yrds or so. That's on clays, not usually considered a threatening target. Does ok on snakes up close, took 2 shots to put down a crazy possum at under 5yrds loaded with 4's. Chop 7 inches off that barrel and how effective do you think it would be?
Kinda aggrevates me everytime I see some company try to sell a 410 pistol as some kinda deathray defence gun.

I was always kinda curious.....are the barrels rifled on those little buggers?
WHat effect does that have on shot pattern?

The way that they get around the BATFE's dim view of smooth-bore pistols is to give the rifling a very long twist. Thus, you end up with a gun that can fire not-very good patterns from a .410 or not-very good groups with the .45 Colt.
T-C had a somewhat different way of handling it back in the 70's and 80's with their hotshot barrels. Those were conventionally rifled and were available in .44 mag or .357 mag. If you wanted to use them for shotshell purpose, you used hotshot cartridges (I don't remember them as other than a load yer own proposition) and a special screw in choke that shredded the shot capsule and (supposedly) gave decent shot patterns. You couldn't fire regular bullet loads with the choke thingy in place without disastrous results.
IMO, if you want something pistolish to fire shotshells, the way to do it is jump through the BATFE's hoops and purchase_or make_something along the lines of the old AutoBurglar. I'd go with the 20-gauge over the .410 if I was the one doing it.

I tested shot and buckshot with my 7 inch barrel .410 CT.
Very poor preformance.
Even from a 7 inch barel, 5 ball 00 Buckshot wouldn't penetrate more than a inch (maximum) in a wood 2x6 and wouldn't penetrate 3/4 inch plywood.
Personally, any gun that doesn't at least go through a 2x4 isn't much of a defense gun.

I saw one of these at the gunshop last week...I wouldn't take it as a gift. :barf: Maybe cool for others, but when I saw it, I was dumb-struck.

I don't want an intruder to wish he had stayed home. I would prefer him stretched out on the floor being resusitated by EMS, or not. The .410 is much less likely to do that for a number of reasons. The .45LC on the other hand... That is a proven fight stopper for nearly 150 years.
