I am in the market to purchase a SP101. That being said, I am having trouble deciding between the hammerless and the 'standard'. My question is: Is the hammerless model really hammerless - - or is it just shaved off and still a small, visible hammer-like part is raised/lowered upon trigger pull.

Given all my experience with shooting sports, I really should know this one :confused:

The hammer is still there, it is just "bobbed",or cut off and contoured like the frame. You need to realize that the spurless model is DAO.

As was said, it's spurless not hammerless and it's DAO. I went with the DAO SP101 for a CCW because of less chance to get hung up on whatever you're wearing and you will be shooting DA in the vast majority of SD situations anyway. Even if I had a spur, I would practice in DA mode keeping in mind a 2 1/4" snubbie is not designed to be a "target" gun...More like a 10 yard or less "point and shoot" in the real world.
I tried dry firing inside my winter coat pocket and it doesn't hang up which is another advantage of spurless.
What ever version you choose, the SP101 will serve your needs well.

I've got one of each type. For pure CCW/defensive use, I'd suggest the spurless model but for a range or woods gun I'd go with the spurred hammer version. Purely personal opinion, you need to ask yourself whether you'll ever want to shoot it single-action or not. Great gun either way.

Can't go wrong with either one. If SA shooting is not important to you, get the DAO. I have both, but I like shooting DA and never use SA mode anyway.

Doesn't matter unless you are carrying IWB. Even then it doesn't matter much unless you are plump or wear lots of clothing.

How are you going to carry it? If it is to be carried in your pocket or other deeper concealment modes (although it is pretty heavy for this), I recommend the spurless. If you think you might want to carry it in a shoulder holster or other holster that requires the use of a thumb break, you will want the spurred. For an open topped belt holster it is a wash.

If you feel like putting a little money into, a meld job will take away all the sharp edges and make the hammer fairly snag resistant...then you can have the best of both worlds...not sure if you can tell from ths pic but it does make a big difference...a bead blast afterwards also makes the gun look real perty...this one was done by Gemini customs for a little over 2 bills...great trigger job and the fiber optic sight is a hoot to shoot with.
