Picked up my first wheel gun today. Taurus model 85 in SS. It is a real sweet shooter. I was surprised at the controlability and lack of recoil. After hearing how the little snubs can be a bit punishing I was a bit apprehensive about shooting for the first time. Well all was for naught. After my first flyer, was shooting 3-4" groups at 7 yards. I'll get further out next range adventure.

Any tips for a revolver rookie?

Do all of your shooting double action. You'll find that with practice, even at long range you can learn to 'stack' your trigger, that means pull it fast, then slow. Its sort of hard to explain, but it makes shooting a DA revolver a lot easier.

Get some snap caps and practice.

Do all you can to resist the temptation to shoot single action. Sure, it makes your groupings look better but shoot double action only;

I also grip my snubs two-handed and very tightly, unlike my semi-autos, which I simply passively hold onto. I found that by utilizing a very snug hold, I can fire double-action quicker and with better accuracy.

I've also found that both of my Taurus revolvers were a bit ammo-sensitive in that with heavier-grain slugs, they seemed to group a little high; with light slugs, a bit low and the bullet weights around 120-130 grains seemed to give the best POI-vs-POA.

I've owned about 9 snubs and loved'em all. Simple but serious self-defense.

Nice choice the Taurus. How do you like those factory soft-rubber grips?

Great choice, a good solid carry gun. Once you get more experience with it (and what to look out for), you'll need to go shopping for a good used ($150-175) blue 85. Them revolvers multiply.
