Which hunting rifle for SHTF?

Most of us say the we would choose an AK, FAL, AR-15, etc. for civil disturbances, invading Peruvian forces and other bad stuff.
What if you had to choose a hunting rifle?
What caliber, make, model would you go with?
Just for the hell of it...

.22 rimfire bolt action. Probably a Ruger 77/22 in stainless with a half dozen mags.
You can kill a deer quite well with a .22.
Killing a squirrel with a .308, and having much left to eat, is another matter. :)

From my current arsenal I'd go with my CZ 452.
Ideally, I'd want a *very* accurate varmint rifle that can hit at 600 yards. Because if some army invades, that's as close as I want to be :D

Why, my wonderfully accurate Winchester 670 Ranger in .30-06, of course. It sure as heck wouldn't be my SKS; I want a chance to hit my target past 200 yards.

BLR in .223 - light, reasonably rapid fire, reasonable round, and I can carry lots of ammo.

Remington 700 LTR. Light, portable and accurate.

Fairly simple, reliable, easy to service, 10 round capacity, easy to top off, and can fire almost as fast as a semi-auto with practice. .44 mag is fairly light and common ammo with good stopping power. One in .357 would be another alternative.

Goon,
One really important thing is where do you live, and what do you hunt. In my area, it would be whitetail, feral hogs, and turkey. My choice for years, echos that of DMK. I cannot find a better hunting rifle for North Central Florida, than the Marlin .44 Mag 1894S.
Others, living around different terrain would choose a bolt gun, or whatever, but for me, this rifle is it.

Remington 870 :D I know its not a rifle, but I can hunt anything in Indiana and provide a good level of protection for my family.
That being said. I am partial to my Savage .308.....

What do you mean, what if we had to choose a hunting rifle? Just what sort of SHTF scenario have you made up where only hunting rifles were available? Is this SHTF rifle to be used against people as a defensive weapon or it is to be used for actually hunting game animals?

"Hunting rifle?" I think that's a fictional term, like "assault weapon" or "sniper rifle". A hunting rifle is any rifle you use to hunt.

The best rifle is the repeater with which you can most reliably hit your target. It is the one with which you are most familiar; the one that you can most easily maintain. Everything else is window dressing...

It would have to be the rifle that is easiest to shoot offhand or from improvised rests. Thus, the Winchester M70 featherweight in .30-06. I can carry that thing all day long and still snap a quick shot. If the Leupold 3-9 breaks or something, I can yank it off and use the factory irons. Ammo is available in a wide range of utility for different critters. Its also fairly accurate.

any good .22LR bolt action.
There's more squirrels & small critters to be 'et than deer, moose, hawgs or two-leggers out there.

levergun in .45-70. 550 grain hardcast lead rounds make short work of mobs dumb enough to line up more than one person deep.

For an every day rifle, that is easy to get along with ammo. Would be a Win 94 30-30, and will not raise the hairs of the antis.
