I just got suckered in to ordering a Yojimbo- the price was too good to pass up. Anyone here own one of these or have opinions on them?

I agree with the design philosophy of the blade, though I don't have a Yojimbo. I do have several Ronins, the fixed-blade ancestor of the Yojimbo. An internet search for Michael Janich and/or Martial Blade Craft should lead you to the information you seek.

My opinion of the Yojimbo is very favorable, based on the excellent blade design and Spyderco's excellent rendering of other knives in their "MBC" category. I have not yet purchased a Yo, having been concentrating on picking up extra Ronins and Guntings, which were discontinued before the Yo. The demand for such excellent knives is somewat limited, so Spyderco does not keep them in production forever.

I know absolutely nothing about the knife, but I think the name is cool enough that I will name my next male offspring "Yojimbo".

I've done quite abit of training with Mike and he says it is the best cutting knife he has seen.

It was designed as a "fighting" knife from the begining. The blade if I remember is like 2 15/16" which at the time was legal everywhere in the US. The handle is extended for striking. Only downside I've found is its impossible for me to open itnertially.

I carry mine regularly. Watch the screws on the pocket clip they do work loose.

You really want to name your kid: Bodyguard/Assassin/Man for Hire?

As for the knife, the form looks very good so the function should follow... If you have other 'carry knives', I'd suggest that you keep this one unused in the box since the value may shoot skywards like the discontinued Spydie Gunting.

I can't speak for him, but I know I definitely want to name my kid that. My question is, who wouldn't? If the hippies can name their kids "Moonshine Love" and "Rainy Day", I can sure as heck name my kid Yojimbo.

Yeah that's a tough one. It like having a piece of candy in front of your nose but are told that you cannot eat it. :D

Here's the thing...you buying as an investment or because you want to use it? If you have the excess cash, you can buy two and do both. In a way, it's a shame the number of knives that never get used for anything but being bought and sold.
In the past, I was known to deliberately do things like getting my initials engraved on a knife just to destroy it as any kind of "investment" so I wouldn't worry about detracting from its value by using and sharpening it.

I don't think I'll ever buy a knife or gun and not use it, its just somehow fundamentally wrong.;)

I wouldn't be too terribly suprised if they did more runs of the Ronin or Yojimbo in the future. I just wish Iwould have known about or had interest in the large Persian while they were still available. I was actually researching the small Persian and its pricing when I discovered the Spyderco forums, and ended up spending several hours just reading about different knives and decided on the Yojimbo after seeing the rave reviews and another poster found a good deal on them.

I use very few knives. I buy knives first & formost because I like the design or maker, not that I will ever get any practical use out of most of them. I don't buy knives as investments, but its a good feeling to know that they go up in value.

If we only bought knives when we needed them, I'd still be using the Chicago Cutlery knives I bought in 1982 and most knifemakers would be out of business...

I just got it in today.
My first impressions were that it looks rather unassuming if not odd looking- kind of like a slightly oversized utility knife in my hands. The blue handle makes it look kind of innocent as well. Nothing about it screams "ninja" which is good.

It rides nicely in my jeans pocket and I hardly know that its there.

The opening is very easy, the geometry is really nice is a bit easier to open than even a Delica.

The blade? The only words to describe it is "freaky sharp"

I shaved a bit of the back of my arm and the knife barely tugged any hair but cut it clean off. I tried shaving my face with it, I had shaved this morning and jst had a little stubble this evening- yup it shaved that clean as well (I only shaved a little off a cheek, I didn't want to injure or maim myself).
I tested it on a few household items, nothing very scientific-
Paracord it cut ith very little resistance. I tied a 6" piece of paracord to a sawbuck in my garage and with a quick snap I was able to cut the dangling end off.

Pastic shopping bags- it cut these with no resistance whatsoever. I could hold a bag in one hand , press the tip of the blade through the bag without feeling it, and zip the knfe through the bottom of the bag- it felt like I what I imagine a lightsabre would feel like.

The lock is something I haven't seen before, it was a little tight at first but got a bit smoother with a few openings/closings, it seems to lock up very tight.

Overall I'm very pleased and impressed.

kind of like a slightly oversized utility knife in my hands.

From what I understand this was another design point. If the knife was ever used in defense and presented in court the jury may say "Gee, that looks just like the box cutter I use a to work... It can't be too bad".

The blue handle makes it look kind of innocent as well.

Supposed to help it from standing out as bad as black when wearing jeans.
