Fellows,
Still trying to help my grandson get going with BP and being a smokeless man myself, I need advice from you. What would be a good practice load AND also a hunting load for his .58 cal,1853 Enfield(repo) with an original style Minie bullet?(500 gr. I believe)
Thanks a lot,

Skip

Try 50-60 gr of 2fg black with a lube on the minie consisting of a 50/50 mix of Bore Butter and beeswax.

My Zouave shoots well with 500 grain minie from a Lee mold with 60 grains 3f.
I use a mix of regular candle wax and crisco, about 70/30 wax/crisco.

Thanks a lot guys. Are these loads warm enough for our Ga. whitetails at 50 to 75 yards?

Try using Fg powder. My brother and I have used it in several BP rife muskets with good results. less felt recoil but same POI. The long "3 band" rifle muskets seem to REALLY like Fg, but even my Zouave worked well with it.

I have a Parker Hale Enfield made in England - two banded job. I used to shoot with the NSSA. They told me it was critical to get the right caliber ball for the best accuracy. So I tried different commercial sizes until I found the right size that shot best - can't remember if it was .575 or so, then bought the mold and cast my own. Don't recall the target load, but it was smaller than the service charge.
