my last buys are probably going to be 2 more rifles. both big bores. i need one for the woods, and i'm thinking of making myself a "sniper" gun sometime in the future. i'm thinking of building up a target gun chambered in .308, and possibly buying a big game gun in 7mm-08, 7mm mag, .280, .270, or something along those lines. what do you guys think?

I'm thinking I'd need to know how many rifles you have before saying whether 2 more is enough. But .308 would probably do for target, game and sniper.

I would suggest a BLR in 7mm-08 for the woods rifle. As for the "sniper" rifle id go with a Springfield M1A or an FN bolt action.

Firstly, those are all medium bores, big bores start at .375 H&H, but it doesn't sound like you really need a big bore.

For an accurate rilfe you could do a lot worse than a Savage with a good aftermarket stock, and .308 is a good round for that.

Of the hunting calibers you mentioned personally I would be comfortable with any of them. I regularly hunt with a 7mm Mauser (similar to the 7mm-08), and .270, .308, 30-06, .300 Win Mag and a .458 Win Mag. Of those you mention I owuld probably pick the 7mm-08, with light 139 gr. loads it's suitable for all deer size game, and with 154-173 gr. loads I'd be quite happy with it for up to Elk size. And the big bonus is it doesn't beat you up. The 7 mag is just more of the same, and in most instances the extra recoil isn't really needed.

I think all rifles are good (with the exception of some of those PDWs which I just can't quite understand the concept...glorified pistols) so the ones you have listed certainly would have a place in my collection. I'm going to pick up rifle #41 tonight...I like rifles.

Agree that those are not big bore rifles...when you decide to go over .4xx cal, then you're going to be up in that range. Nothing wrong with a .308 long range precision rifle (not sniper...the man is the sniper, not the rifle). The other calibers are a pretty wide range...7-08 is great for lighter recoil big game...7mm Mag will take you up quite a ways...I'd narrow that down a little.

Finally, I didn't understand some of the words you used in your post. my last buys are probably going to be 2 more rifles" I'm not sure I understand what "last buys" are with respect to guns. And "2 more rifles"...again, I can't get my head around that.

I have no suggestions for your "sniper" set-up.

I would definitely recommend the .280 Remington that you mentioned in your original post. If you handload then it is even better.

You can look at the Remington 700 mountain rifle or Ruger MKII.
