Here is Remington's year of manufacture code list. I'm sure it will come in handy as it seems quite a few people are interested in dating their 870's.

Remington Firearms Serial Number Identification
(Code located on barrel, left side at frame)

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

Thanks for posting that. One can also establish the manufacturing date by calling 800-243-9700 and asking Remington directly. Their response will be based on the serial number, so a barrel switch in the past will not lead to erroneous data.

I have an older Rem Model 11A with two barrels - the letters on both the barrels are "REP" - Would this mean Oct /1923 with the R for Remington?

... the letters on both the barrels are "REP"... You need to check on the left side of the barrel. "REP" on the right side means "Remington Proofed" and should be marked on every modern barrel.

Both barrels only have the choke on the left side ("Full" and "Cyl") I'll cal Rem w/ serial #. Thanks
