I just bought a mossberg 500 today...it is the 20 inch barrel, synthetic stock model. The 50577 model to be exact....payed 209.99 for it at big5 sporting goods, on sale....I am just itching to do something to it....I dont really know what....just something....something "tactical"....
Anyone have any suggestions? Some websites I can look at? Some pictures of their customized 500s? thanks in advance.

BA/UU/R until it feels like a body part. At that point and NOT before, you'll have a good idea of what it and you NEED versus what will just suck money out of your wallet.
Don't worry about looks, any shotgun looks tactical as heck when it's used to knock down/destroy/shatter multiple targets in small increments of time.
As for cosmetics and Cool Stuff, get them after you're absolutely deadly, if you still want them....

Hello, Dave!
Newbie needs clarification on the following:
"BA/UU/R" - say what? :D
Thanks!

Guru McCracken say "BA/UU/R - Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat!"
Good recipe... the Chaplain hereby secondeth the lesson! :D

Oh jeez guys, thanks a lot...I never would have thought to buy ammo and shoot it...This isnt my first shotgun, it is my third...I just bought it to fiddle with, but no one seems to want to help me fiddle, so whatever.
Im going back over to general handgun discussion.

Replace the safety "button" with a metal one, the stock plastic one has a habit of breaking.
Its not hard to cut the stock down, i did my wifes and really like the way it feels tho i don't have any trouble with my 590 stock.
You can get a light attachement rail for the m3 light if that floats your boat.

This is my Mossy 500. I added a sidesaddle, heatshield, ATI pistol grip stock, a fiber-optic front sight and the flashlight goes on when the mount arrives.

whatever you do, don't add a PG stock to it, as it completely defeats the purpose of having the tang mounted safety.
You should consider making the gun fit you properly and possibly adding GR sights.

Andrew, I heard that also...and it makes a lot of sense. How about the stocks that fold to the side?
That wouldnt interrupt the tang safety, would it?

I don't know about the tang safety but i would think that a PG stock would interfere with the slide release. I meant to check this out with the PG that came with one of mine but couldn't find the bolt.

Careful which stock you buy. The Choate side folders increase felt recoil through that steel arm.
I'd at least get it a side saddle, and a Blackhawk cheekpad/ammo pouch.

Step 1: Cycle 200 rounds through the weapon. Use light field loads for the first 180 or so to save your shoulder. Work on a good stock weld.
Step 2: Pattern the piece using butcher paper using Buckshot and the light field loads for indoor work.
Step 3: Practice shooting targets out to 25 yards with slugs. Find the load which performs best while allowing you fast recovery from recoil.
Then seek a knowledgeable one and insure the stock length is good for you.
Only then start considering modifications, beginning with sights.

Sorry, I'm no fiddler. I prefer performance to looking "Cool". If you want to learn enough to up your life expectancy, or add to your enjoyment of using your shotgun, feel free to ask questions and please contribute what you can to this terrific info-base.
But if you're more into showing off your toys and impressing the impressionable, sorry, we don't have much for you...

If you can find a side folder that has the same profile as the factory non PG stock, it won't interfere with the safety.

I've never had a problem with the slide release, I can reach it with my middle finger.
As for the saftey, it gets released when I grab it out of the closet. if I'm grabbing it I need it. If I am holding it the saftey is the part under my too rapidly thinning hair.

Yeah that's what i dont get. I can trip my slide release with my SF stock but it looks like the PG would be in the way of the release on yours.

I flick the safety off as i bring the weapon up, and back on as it goes down.
I see no reason to not use it, since it is there.

Maybe the handgun forum is more tolerant, but I'd say you're being a bit pissy here! If you were an experienced shotgunner, why didn't you just say so? Getoverit.

Ok, I am sorry if I sounded pissy here...
This 200 dollar mossberg is a project gun...I bought it because it is cheap, and there is a lot of cheaply available aftermarket products available for it...
But, someone though they would be the ALL WISE ONE and suggest I buy ammo...cute.
That is fine, no one knows I have other shotguns....I can see how someone claiming to have bought a Moss 500 would sound like a new shotgunner....It is just that my other two shotguns are nice pieces, and I really just wanted a beater, to tinker with, and fiddle.
However, the onfo that everyone has given me since then, has been exactly what I was looking for...Priceless little nuggets of knowledge such as: "The Choate side folders increase felt recoil through that steel arm."
Now THAT is worth knowing...thank you edward, and everyone else who answered the question that I asked.
I am sorry Dave, that you didnt want to answer my question, but rather attempt to demonstrate to me and everyone else, that my question was stupid, my wants are stupid, and that you will just take my thread in a different direction. And guess what, maybe fiddling with this 500 IS THE WAY I "add to (my) enjoyment of using (my) shotgun".
You were the one who saw my post, and thought: "Ill show this newbie buy telling him to stop trying to be a tatical poser, and just practice with that stupid mossberg until he reaches puberty and can buy a benelli."
And bruce, exactly what was it of me that you HAD to TOLERATE??? If the handgun forum is tolerant, as you say, does that make you intolerant?
Whatever...
Thank you all very much who responded to my thread with the information I requested.

So far I've only added a butt-cuff and sling to my 590. Heatshield is next because I keep burning my fingertips from 'overgrabbing' the forearm.
A sidesaddle is also in the future, but after the heat shield.
If you decide you want to go with a PG only, let me know, you can have the one that came with my 590.
Enjoy!

For a cheap add-on, get an elastic butt-stock shell holder. Looks coll and practical too!:)

Until they loosen up and walk all over the stock. If you get the 'expensive' Blackhawk or Eagle one, it stays put like a rock. And gives you a place to carry the two allen wrenches for the side saddle.
(Why oh why do they make the allen wrenches different sizes for side saddles?!)

You misunderstood. If you click on Dave's profile and then click on read all the posts, you will see that Dave has been consistently helpful and not condescending. You read something into the response that simply was not there.
In any event, when I ask for help free of charge, I say "Thank you" even if the help I receive is not the help I thought I wanted. Silly of me, I guess. Maybe I'll try berating those who offer to help me and see if that improves the responses.
Oh, and "can buy a benelli." LOL. You really don't know Dave, do you?

Ricky, that very well may be the case....and if it is...I am truly sorry.
And you are right, I dont know dave...all I know of him is what I have read in this particular post.
"But if you're more into showing off your toys and impressing the impressionable, sorry, we don't have much for you..."
Replies such as this one from dave got my blood in a boil, in a matter of speaking. I didnt come here to impress, nor do I own firearms to impress...but my Moss 500 was bought for myself as a "fun gun" project...Something to tinker with, and put a little money into...If someone is impressed with it afterwards, then so be it...
And the fact of the matter is, almost everyone who responded to this thread HAD something for me, including a few very good tips, while Dave felt that "we don't have much for you..."
It is ok, I dotn have any hard feelings....Im sure dave is a valuable, knowledgable, and helpful member of THR, and specifically of the shotgun section. I may have caught him on a bad day, or he may have caught me on a bad one...but like I said, water under the bridge.
As of right now, I have purchased a heat shield....I have never burnt my fingers on my autoloader, but I have already felt the pain on the 500 a few times...so I got a tac star heat sheild, and that has solved that minor problem..
I have also been offered a rear pistol grip from Darrin, which I have yet to recieve, but am very thankful for in advance...This will be a nice addition, cut the length down, and make it more friendly for HD situations, which this 500 may replace my High Standard RIOT 12 as my main HD gun.
As for mods, this may very well be it....I think I may like it in its configuration once the PG gets placed...I may get a side saddle, but that isnt a priority.
One again, thanks to all of you...including dave.:)

Arin, the holiday weekend has been a mess. I'll have the PG shipped to you today.
People, let it go. Arin and Dave have already explained themselves.

Re: Pistol Grips
Dave made an interesting post on pistol grips on shotguns some time ago. You might want to check it out. Let us know if your experience is different.

P.S. If I were to modify my Mossy, it would be with a tactical light like SureFire.

My bad. The High Road is in some respects a continuation of The Firing Line, and it turns out that the post I remembered was made there, not here. Here's the link:

BTW, I edited my last post before you responded to add a reference to the Surefire light.
