Have a question for all the 32 acp lovers and 45 acp Lovers. I have read a Lot of threads of how great the 32 acp is including mine, If the 32 acp was such a hit with the police department in EUROP! why is it that everyone has upgraded to 9MM or more like here in America 45 acp Glocks? The 32 acp proved to be a round of its own standing for Hitler and his military force. Granted! Knowing that a BG pumped up will not go down, even with a shot gun , then a 32 acp should surfise in the situations.:) Why is it that the general poblic is hung with fiction of Gun size in the Movies?

why is it that everyone has upgraded to 9MM or more like here in America 45 acp Glocks?Because they're better? .32 might be "good enough"(and barely,at that) but Nazis and Commies upgraded to 9x18 and 9x19,and USA just used the good ol' .45 all along...
By the way,make my .45 ACP a 1911.

Great for what, pissing people off? I would rather throw rocks then use a 32acp to defend my life with. Good luck with that....

The Nazis used 9mm mostly. So did the Japanese. Remember the Luger and Walther p-38? 9mm. Japanese revolvers were 9mm too. (You can still buy 'em on gunbroker)
USA used the Colt .45, England used the Colt 45 and the Webley 455

Yes all good reply, at the highroad there are numerus recomendation to use the 32 acp and the 380 acp, especialy if it is for a lady, Doesn't any body think this is ill advice for any one? All you have to do is search under 32 acp or 380 even 380 vs 32 and you will see what Imean!

Guns were probably banned in those countries at the time. So the .32ACP likely was enough as a police caliber.

it should be noted that most historical .32 acp frames aside from the Broomhandle were compact frames.
I think ease of carry was probably as much of a concern or appeal as caliber per se.
.32 acp had its most popualrity with individuals inclined to use the caliber little but carry the weapon often. This is probably why .32 acp stayed with police and officers, but widespread military use perferred 9mm and .45acp. (dependign on continent, and .455 webley of course)
that beind said, the french military did use a .32 acp submachine gun before and after WWII.
with regards to modern use, there are sufficiently compact 9mm and higher caliber frames around to mean someone can choose something other than .32 and .380 in a pocket auto.

Cops used 38 Spc +P and 9mm until the big "Angel Dust / PCP" scares of the 1980s where people were rumored to run "miles and miles" while being shot multiple times by the small bore calibers.
This spawned all types of lore and legend so much that the FBI went to 10mm (I am not going there) and some LEO's went to .357s/.45s (which some still use) buit then most later scaled back to a .40 S&W in a Sig, Glock, HK when the FBI backed off the 10mm deal.
People are swayed by emotions. I am too. I bought a .40 cal Glock because I wanted the most ballistics without going into more uncommon ammo. But I still carry a .380 in a P3AT and with Cor-bon ammo. I am 100% not too concerned that a BG can be taken down by a quick controlled pair to the chest (I know I wouldnt be able to handle it). :D

Well, the debate is over after that presentation of scientific study.

will the .32 acp kill someone? yes, so will a .22 the goal of defensive shooting is to STOP an attacker, not to kill them. If you shoot them once and it stops them and they live, GREAT! if you shoot them and they die 4 hours later, but kill you in the process, it doesn't work out so well for you.

That scientific study fails the peer-review. With the rest of us being the peers!
The British officially replaced the .445 Webley with the .380 Enfield (aka .38-200) long before WW2. Of course, being short of pistollas they used the .455s they still had. Along with the 9mm Inglis made High-Powers.
As for Nazi's, being short of pistollas they used any pistols they could get their National Socialist mitts on. To include .32s for those SS guards who lived in fear of 5/8ths-starved camp inmates. And they used High-Powers and even 1911s (the ones made in Norway in the Colt-licensed factory).

32 ACP is plenty in Europe because in Europe pistols were primarily used to shoot kneeling prisoners in the back of the head.

Haven't most European police agencies switched to 9x19 over the last 20 years? Prior to the semi-auto craze here in the US police carried Colt or S&W revolvers, most in .38 Special - that was from the early 1900s to the mid 1970s. Further, consider that lawmen in the US carry sidearms as part of their everyday gear, contrasted with the European mentality of the pistol as little more than a badge of authority.

Yep, but many here recommend .32 and .380 chamberd guns for pocket & small belt gun sized carry pieces. Comparing an "always" gun to a duty gun isn't a comparison.

There are so many smart asses on this forum. :p
Anyways the world has been struck by the tacticool bug and everyone is convinced that if the gun doesn't have at least one piece of polymer or a bunch of machined aluminum parts then it isn't suitable for police/military use.

About 12 years ago I had a discussion with a police detective in Holland whose issue gun had just been upgraded to 9mm. He told me that gun crime had become much more common due to the availability of guns from Eastern European countries as Soviet Soldiers were selling off their guns before being pulled back to Russia. Another factor was an increase in violence due to an influx of criminals from Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries. He was very happy with his increase in firepower and considered the 9mm a very powerful round.

Or maybe because the average European is still trying to shake off being a subject and fills his pants when a gun is pointed at them?

Let's say you are doing something that you should stop and the best way to stop you is hit you in the head. I can choose to hit you with a dowel rod or a 2X4. Sometimes, bigger is better. The dowel rod might have worked, but we'll never know...

Now, whether that's a good bumpersticker, another question, but it's boiled pretty well, I think ;)

Out of the three pistol calibers I own, .32ACP and .45ACP are two of them. :p
IMHO,
.32ACP is an acceptable pocket gun/back-up caliber.
.45ACP is an acceptable duty gun/primary caliber.
Times change, as newer technologies become more readily available, people upgrade.
In the past (1900-1950s), the .32ACP was the standard issue for many European police agencies. During the 1950s, European police agencies started replacing their .32ACP sidearms with 9x19mm sidearms.
In the past (1900-1970s), the .38Special was the standard issue for many American police agencies. During the 1980s, American police agencies started to replace their .38Special sidearms with 9x19mm sidearms. The 1990s, brought about the replacing of 9x19mm sidearms to .40S&W sidearms. The .45ACP was always a popular non-standard issue but authorized caliber in American police service.

The .32acp used by police in such places as Europe and Hong Kong was not because it was a great performer, but it was the accepted norm.
As for being good enough for Hitler, ***? So it is a good suicide caliber. Hitler didn't spend much time in WWI fighting with a handgun and none in WWII.
FYI, I think you missed the boat with the movie reference. The discussion is about calibers and you are asking about Gun size in movies. There are some large sized small caliber guns and vice versa.
FYI, you might ask yourself as to why the .32 has been abandoned as a primary caliber for police work around the world.

I like the 45 acp for a few reasons, the biggest one being I truely believe a bigger heavier bullet will end a gunfight faster than a smaller one. Plus the 45's I've shot vs. the 32's I've shot tells me the platforms for the 45s are nicer -- mechanically.

You get in a fight (all else being equal) - would you...
rather be a big guy or a little guy?
rather have a big bat or a little bat?
rather have a big knife or a little knife?
rather have a big gun or a little gun?
rather have a big bullet or a little bullet?
In a fight - maybe bigger is better!

The .32acp in the Walther PPK and the Mauser HSc were more of an "officer's" pistol that was more of a badge of rank and status symbol.
Remember that during this period of time the Colt .32acp was the United States "General Officer's Pistol" that came with a nicely finished belt, magazine pouch and holster.
By no means is the .32acp a so-called "serious" combat round...but it sure beats the heck out of a tactical presentation of harsh language in the classic Weaver stance. Hell, I'd be the last guy in the volunteer line to get shot with a pellet gun, let alone a .32, or a .22, or WHATEVER.

Once upon a time everyone carried flintlocks. But us guys in the know switched over to a different ignition system when a better one came along.:D
Of course, if you want to choose a flintlock as your carry gun -- or a .32 ACP, go right ahead.

maybe it boils down to this little fact seen in everyday life in the media:
9 mm and 45 acp have far better penetration through walls, doors, furniture, people. thats the reason. They got tired of watching 32 acp bullets bounce off futons and went to something that would perforate the futon as well as the guy behind it.
Hollowpoints work better in a 45 then a 32. Seen to many photos of 32acp hollowpoints that barely manage to expand past .35 inches, and they barely seem to expand when they hollowpoint gets filled with a winter coat.

<DECRYPTION> If .32ACP was good enough for the Eurocops, why do macho americans believe that they NEED the big bad horribly overpowered .45ACP? </DECRYPTION>
I think that's what was being asked.
Bigger is better. I am a big guy, and I carry a big knife, a big gun, and it tosses big bullets. I like it that way.

This thread is not worth the effort required to read it.
For those really interested, and trying to make a worthwhile contribution to this topic, I'm sorry. I THINK I see the intended aim but it was so vaguely stated as to be unintelligible. Also, some of the replies had about zero signal-to-noise ratio.
If anyone wants to re-start the discussion, please at least make an EFFORT toward spelling, grammar, and organization. Let us bear in mind that not everyone who reads these entries is pro-guns and shooting. We MAY not be able to influence the blind, unreasoning antigunners, but we have a chance with the undecided and neutral readers.
