Firefly - Mal's pistol cartridges?

Ok, this is something I haven't read on here yet. Can anyone place what caliber round Mal uses to load his pistol in the show/movie? I distinctly remember seeing a scene of him loading the magazine, but I can't place the rounds. They look almost like .38 special or .357 Mag to me, but I'm not sure.
Anyone?

Yes, .38 special in the "loading" scene of Serenity*
(confirmed by a friend of one of the prop guys, I believe)
The pistol itself is (as you may well know already) a Taurus 85 with the gripframe cut off and an "old western" one welded on, then covered with a lot of custom cast brass pieces.
Purty, ain't it? :)
*How he's supposed to get more than a shot or two out of that tiny little mag is a source of great speculation. :)

Mal just needs one or two shots anyway.
Love the scene where Dobson is holding River Tam hostage
and Mal walks in, draws while walking and fires, sending
Dobson to the hot place, without saying a word. I watched
a CSI-type show where a psycho had a cop's partner hostage
and it seemed like they palavered pointlessly for fifteen minutes.
I asked the TV: "Where's Malcolm Reynolds when you need him?"
Yeah, Mal's pistol does have a short magazine. Even double column
with flat mauser-style spring the capacity could not be more than six,
closer to three or four.

Bad Penny 03 apparently left the keys to his spaceship in his other pants.

Is that kind of like :
"Nice boots...I didn't see your horse on the way in..."
"You park it out back ?"

I wonder why nobody in the real world has thought to put a lever on the side so you can cock it...
sending Dobson to the hot place,
Not if you read the comic!

The firearms in the Firefly universe also make electronic noises.
If the method of propulsion really is (http://davidvs.blogspot.com/2006/11/handgun-technology-in-sci-fi-future.html) electrically ignited gas (maybe a canister above the trigger on Mal's pistol?) then a magazine would only need to hold bullets, not complete cartridges. A small magazine by our standards could still hold plenty of bullets.

But you see him loading complete cartridges. I think it holds three. I'll take a Glock any day - though that didn't seem to help Simon when they stormed Niska's Skyplex.
"I don't know, I'd never shot anyone before..."
"I was there son, you've haven't shot anyone, yet."
