I have a Charles Daly 12 ga. field hunter. (please hold all criticisms, I know its a cheap gun, I should have got an 870 express.) Anyway, Charles Daly does not offer a rifled or slug barrel. Which slugs can I shoot through it. I believe it has a modified screw in choke. I was told by CD that the chokes are compatible with remington choke tubes, which is nice. What should I try?

I would start with an improved cylinder choke tube and brenekke (spelling errror) slugs. You can shoot all the slugs through it but some will be a lot more accurate than others. Sabots will be extremely inaccurate since they are made for the rifled barrels so stay away from them.

In my 870 with an IC tube, I've had the best results with Federal Hi Shok 2 3/4".

is IC the best choke for slugs? How about mod.? All I've heaqrd is don't use fulls.

Best choke? Every gun/barrel is different. I know people who have had good results with every combination you can imagine, even full choke -- although I would not recommend it. You just have to experiment (lots of shooting:D) to see what works best for you.

For home defense or any other use not requiring extreme penetration, I recommend Federal Truball low recoil slugs. They are accurate in most guns, have about 30% less recoil and blast and expand in meat to about 1". They will cause much less down range damage than Brennekes.

I load my HD gun (6rd mag capacity) with 4 Truball low recoil slugs and I have 2 Truflite low recoil 00 buck and 2 Brennekes in the receiver shell holder.

I keep it chamber empty, cocked, safety on. Makes it somewhat "proprietary to the user". If someone gets to it before me they have to figure out how to unlock the action and release the safety before they can use it. While they are doing that I will be retrieving my handgun and using it as necessary.
