Just saw a short segment on gun crime in Philly. Guess what. It was the fault of all those "guns in the hands of young people". It did have some solutions in addition to banning, but it was very anti-gun. I especially liked the comment that there are "approximately 200,000,000 guns in America, many illegal".:barf:
Catie will have a follow-up tonight.:banghead:

I say ban "young" people, that'll cut back on the crime rate.

Let's make a law, a federal law in fact, that one must be 18 to purchase shotguns and rifles and 21 to buy a pistol. If we only had such a law young people would not be committing crimes. Remember, the problem is not a crumbling culture that holds life in such low regard but your constitutional rights.

Just remember, folks, that the mainstream media is unbiased and has no agenda. I mean, I've heard it here on THR so it must be true.

Actually, they should have specified "Young Black Males".

Not trying to sound racist...but that's the group commiting the murders. I've talked to one of the Philly rep's aides. Even they acknowledge that fact.

My response to him was "then why punish millions of other (non-young black male) citizens for their crimes?"
As you might expect, there was no answer...

The Rep's name is Angel Cruz...I didn't write down the Aide's name.

Actually, they should have specified "Young Black Males".

It is true, I am no racist, but the fact is black males are responsible for 50% of the murders and represent less than 10% of the population. It is not guns or weapons of any type, it is a cultural problem.

90% of the murders in Philly or here in Baltimore are the ghetto people killing their own over some drug deal gone bad. Consider me disinterested in whether they kill themselves or not.

However, what I do care about is the media spin trying to make Mr. & Mrs. uninformed suburban American voter scared to death that America's streets are "awash in guns" and we have to do something, anything to solve the "problem". :barf:

Was it the same one that they ran on "The See BS Evening News?"

I've seen a lot of "guns in the hands of young people" on this site. Looks like great wholesome family fun to me. I hope to pass on the sport/hobby/pastime/right someday myself.

Maybe we should just make murder illegal. That'll solve the problem right? Naw, they are right to want to ban guns. Nobody was ever killed before guns were invented.

approximately 200,000,000 guns in America, many illegal"

ironically I just did the math in the last day or so and that number of guns is very close to what I estimated, which is 224 million.

Whether "many" are illegal depends on 2 things. What do they define as "many"? Even 10 million illegal guns is only 4%. 22 million is nearly hitting the 10% mark. That's still 90% of guns being legally owned by law abiding citizens. So what is "many"?

And second, I don't recall the surveys which helped get to this number of guns mention anything about how many were illegal guns. You think if the govt calls somebody's house asking if they own a gun, the person is going to say, "Yes. It's illegal.... but it's still a gun. :)"

I don't think so. As far as I know, there is no way to know exactly how many illegal guns there are. So to state either "few" or "many" seems difficult if not impossible.

.cheese. - whose young hands have had guns in them many many many times.

"I saw a piece on NBC recently about "black rifles" and how they can be soooo dangerous in the wrong hands"

So can baseball bats, kitchen knives 'n screwdrivers... or your basic bolt action single shot rifle. The problem is the wrong hands... not the black rifle.

Maybe we should pass a law that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals? It's worth a try.

In fact, I think that they said it was mostly white males killing each other.

In Philadelphia, according to a short interview with Commish Johnson, is between 80-85% black on black crime. In addition, he did make a statement that no amount of gun control laws, adding police, or some other things are going to stop this all by themselves. That being said, I can't figure out why then he has more gun control at the top of his list. Occasionally he says something smart and right on. Then he follows if up with dumb statements that make no sense.

Please stop using the term "illegal gun". There is no such thing. A gun is just a tool and while it could be in the hands of someone who is by law not allowed to have one... the gun itself in never "illegal".

Agreed!!! Guns are inanimate objects and it is impossible for them to commit a crime or break the law.

The same is true for the gun grabber mantra of "crime gun".

But should they offer amnesty for these "illegal guns"? I mean, they just do the shootings that most high-end guns don't want to do. :neener:

As a "young person" I take offense to that. (I'm 20 years old, by the way.) Not all us young'uns are thugs and gangbangers. But then again, it is CBS, so maybe I shouldn't get so worked up about it. That Dan Rather scandal I think, has permanantly marred their reputation.

If there are some young people who can't be trusted, clearly there are no young people who can be trusted. You see, in a liberal democracy, we have this thing called "presumption of innocence," which means that you are as innocent as everyone else in your age-group, and thus that they must all be convicted of untrustworthiness at once and uniformly punished. Obviously, we believe in the existence of the so-called "individual," but we simply question whether or not this hypothetical being exists as anything more than a combination of broad demographic characteristics.
