First Revolver

I have been wanting a revolver for a while. I have been hearing so many good things about the Ruger GP-100 so I bought one. It is a 357 blue with a 6" barrel. Anything special I need to know?

Basically, just clean it and shoot it. There is an assortment of front sights in various colors available for it, if you don't like the stock one. Very simple to change. Sometimes the trigger is a little gritty from the factory. This is usually fixed with some dry firing. I have a couple of GP100s and both have been great. Enjoy your new Ruger.

Thanks, I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. The front sight looked pretty good but I was thinking about upgrading.

Dry fire the pants off the dear thing! Two things will happen: 1. The mechanical bits will become used to living and working with each other. 2. Your hands and finger will become used to your revolver and its action.
The above is NOT original thought. An old cowboy known as Elmer Keith often provided this advice regarding ANY new revolver. He was right.

If you are impatient, the GP-100 takes well to an action job. I have a police trade-in that had an action job done by the PD armorer. It's has the sweetest pull of any gun I own, (and I have a bunch of Colts and Smiths).

CU74, you must own and tuned Colts or S&Ws. :)

The lines on that gun are great! I am glad to see they are making that model with the half-lug barrel. Much better looking in my opinion than the full lug types.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if they make it any more with the half lug barrel. I bought this used.

Don't know how much you paid but I would like to join the others and say you have a fine revolver. If this is your first revolver you certainly could have done far worse. You chose one of the top revolvers made today. You did great. It may be difficult to conceal without a shoulder holster but for just kicking around in the woods it will do just fine. Enjoy it, this revolver will last a lifetime.
