I'm considering getting a bolt action .308. Which one of these would you get and why? What type of scope should I get for 2-500 yard shooting?

I will vote for the Remy, because it will out shoot me.

I'd have to say---if it were my money----I would be getting the Steyr.

A Remington doesn't even come close.

I have to interject here -

I just picked up a new Savage in the McMillan stock and new trigger. The trigger is super good. Cheap too.

Anyway, it might not interest ya, but I thought you oughta know.

If you're a relatively new rifle shooter, then the Rem 700P is plenty of gun to cut your teeth on. If you really get into it, by the time you shoot out the barrel, you'll be ready to send it off to a good smith for a custom job. When you do, you'll find that many of the smiths specializing in that type of rifle favor the Remington 700 action. The Steyr might shoot a bit better right out of the box, but if you're a newbie, you won't notice the difference, and if you're a pro, it won't be enough.

For a scope, I have the 16X Leupold Mark IV on my 700P, with Badger rings and base. My 700LTR has the Leupold 3.5-10X40 M1 Long Range. Both are excellent choices. Unless you're ready to spend really big bucks on glass, you can't beat Leupold.
