I am looking for a home defense weapon and before i get a .45 acp or a .357 revolver..I want to ask if they make a MP5 looking weapon obviously not with automatic or burst..Something anyone can own legally and hopefully in .45acp..
This is a stupid question but just thought i would ask ..Looking basically for a short rifle or pistol that you hold with both hands but both hands arnt on the same part of the gun..

HK makes the USC in .45 ACP.
They also imported a semi-auto version of the MP5 called the SP89, but those things usually cost four figures.

You can get the Special Weapons HK clones for around a grand. http://www.tactical-weapons.com/SW%20page.htm
If you just want a pistol caliber carbine, not nessecarily a MP5 clone then Keltec makes the Sub9 and Sub2000 I believe they're called. Very affordable. And although alot of people turn their up at them, the Hipoint Carbines are supposed to be decent and are dirt cheap, although damn ugly...

Special Weapons also made (makes?) a MP5 clone in 45acp that accepts M3 greasegun mags. They called it the SW-45, iirc.

My short home defence carbine in .45 is capable of shooting 250gr+ bullets at velocities no .45 HK ever dreamed of. But then again, it was made by Winchester.

Here are some alternatives to consider. I know that the AR and M1 Carbine aren't pistol caliber, but they work well for this application. If I were only anticipating using it as a house gun, I'd go with either the M1 Carbine, or one of the pistol caliber carbines. Much less blast and flash than the AR.
1. A light weight 16" bbl AR15 from Colt or Bushmaster.
2. An M1 Carbine.
3. The new Berretta Storm. I handled one at SHOT. Very nice, very racy.
4. Either a Marlin or Winchester lever carbine in 44 mag or 45 LC.
Any of these will do if you will do.

Get youself a short scattergun like the Mossberg 500 (?) series.
That would make a way better in-home defense tool. They don't look quite as cool as a MP5 though.

My short home defense weapon is the Maverick 88 by Mossberg, with the 18-1/2" barrel.
Looking for an M-1 carbine, though....

I think Tamara hit the nail right on the head. Any of the popular lever actions in .45LC, .357 or .44 mag.
Light, handy, fun, powerful without going overboard, PC friendly, easy to top off and look darn good.
That would be my suggestion also.

My MP5PDW-substitute: Glock 17L with Bubits stock, one 33-round and two 19-round mags.

A M-1 carbine would fit the bill. Stick with the 15 round mags though.

If your signature is true, I wouldn't think you would need a .45 caliber carbine, or be better served by one, unless you just want one.

I don't like to admit it BUT: I have a Calico carbine with collaspable stock in 9mm that I keep handy and hidden around the ranch. The 100 round drum is loaded but not wound. A 100 rounds of GECO 9mm ball in a few seconds is mighty impressive and the durn thing doesn't jam-ever!!! The thing is as accurate as my old UZI was and the muzzle brake and hokey sights work OK. A real sleeper IMHO , I have a 50 round mag too that makes it real compact. I have a 'Liberty" .22 pistol too but thats another story.:D

I would recommend picking up a stick and beating your attacker with it before recommending anything from Special Weapons. A stick is reliable, the Special Weapons guns are/were not. Customer service is/was remarkable not for it's excellence but for its extreme inconsistency. Couple this with inconsistent quality control and you have absolutely no idea whether you're buying a gem (rare) or a piece of junk (all too common).
This is NOT info from a dissatisfied customer, either. I never owned one of the weapons but my info is better than 99.9% of the people are going to get. If you're REAL interested, e-mail me off-forum.

Hey Justin, just for the record, an SP-89 is not a civilian version of an MP-5. The SP-89 is like an MP-5K without the vertical foregrip (and select fire capability). The HK-94 is the civilian version of an MP-5. The HK-94, besides not having select-fire, also has a 16" bbl and they're running about $3K plus right now.
chetrogers, as Justin suggested, the HK USC would be something to look at it. Forget about Special Weapons. It's a crapshoot when you get into one of those.

What about a pistol caliber conversion for an AR15?
Olympic Arms makes a number of them including a .45....

I would highly recomend that you get a 223 carbine like an AR15 or a Mini 14. The 223 is less overpenatrative in homes than handguns are and it offers far greater stopping power. I would take the 12 gauge shotgun after the 223 carbine and my last choice would be a pistol caliber carbine.

I would be very concerned about over penetration with this load. It looks like a good bear defense load though if its a hard cast lead slug.

I'd pass on the Special Weapons carbines. I got to check one out some time ago and I was not impressed.
If I'm not mistaken I believe they are either out of business of changed the company name.

I have a double barrel shot gun and a sar-1 that i could use for home defense but i just see myself going to jail if i defended my life with the sar-1..Im sure the attorney would build a case around one of these so called bad assault rifels...I dont know think I'm just gonna get a .45 or a .357

I agree a shotgun is best if you live in a liberal area. If you live in a good area politically then the weapon you use will not matter.

Ok, I'm throwing the BS flag on this (thread drift ahead). Has ANYBODY actually got an example of anyone using a semi-auto rifle in a valid self-defense situation that has gotten charged for using the rifle?
We're having this same discussion on another board, and everybody and his brother offers up the "lawyers gonna get ya" threat, but nobody has a concrete example of this actually happening.
