A friend of mine purchased a beautiful Winchester Model 70 in 284 Winchester caliber. I know the brass is still available as well as some ammo. Is it possible to form this caliber from another cartridge. In looking in my reloading manual possibly from a 7mm Mauser case. Any help would be appreciated.

.284 is a parent case, I don't believe it is formed from any other cartridge. Winchester developed it in the 60's to match ballistics of the .300WM.

The .284 Winchester has a rebated rim so making it out of another cartridge will be problematic.

I shoot a .284, nice cartridge. The brass is available from Winchester, not too expensive considering how many you generally shoot out of a hunting rifle, think it ran me about .40 a piece but 100 cases should last me the rest of my time in that gun.

It's used to make a lot of the wildcat long-range cartridges, so it's pretty commonly available, check ebay as Winchester only runs it once a year or so and some times of the year it can be hard to find.

Lapua, Norma, and Nosler all make 6.5x284 brass, also I think Hornady does or did offer it too. They are very high grade stuff and running them through your 284 sizing die will open the necks back up and provide cases.

Thankyou much gentlemen for your input. I am trying to help out a friend on this one. I think the best way to go is to purchase about 100 rounds of 284 brass since it is available . He purchased a bargain model 70 because the guy whom owned it could not find shells for it. Thanks again.

I agree that it is a parent cartridge. In fact, when 7.5 x 55 Swiss was in such short supply, many made them by reforming .284.

Uncle Don beat me to it.

Good luck.
