870 Cantilever.. What have I got?

I bought this from the big auction site a few years ago. It is a Remington smooth bore with a rifled screw in choke.
It came with a dovetailed type cantilever mount with rings made to fit it. It works very well but I have never heard or seen a cantilever remington without the weaver type slots.
Any ideas on this?
Thanks!

What you have is a treasure.
It's one of the old cantilever systems. You can take off the cantilever bridge (it's screwed on) and use the base that the cantilever mounts on as a scout scope base, mounting a scout scope on the barrel base with the same rings you have (Burris Zee rings IIRC). It's a LOT steadier that way than the cantilever style mount, and if you're a scout scope fan it's fast as fast can be too.
Like I said, a treasure. Not made any more. You done good.
See http://www.jtk3.com/laissezfirearm/870full.htm for my late amigo Mark Penman's discussion of the same barrel (Remington Part #6231).
I have the same type barrel on my 11-87 with a scout scope. It definitely works...

Thanks, That is some very useful and interesting information. I had no idea why that mount was set up as it was but I knew there was more attachments than it needed.

Glad to be of some help. Being a font of mostly useless trivia occasionally has its upside... 8^).
