I just wanted to share (show off) one of the guns I inherited from my grandfather when he passed away a few years ago. This one eve still has the original box :what:.
The serial number appears to be "C 781XX", anyone have some idea what year it was made?

SCSW indicates C1-C223998 as a range from 1948 - 1951. Nice looking M&P, is the box gold or red?

The box is gold. Is there some significance to that?

Yes there is. Certain style points help date the gun. The gold boxes were introduced right after World War Two and continued in use until around the mid-1950's. Current value of the box alone is about $50.00 if it's in perfect shape.
The "short action" (identified by the hammer) was introduced in 1948,and you have an early style hammer.
The front sight shape was changed in 1952
The style of stocks date from 1946 to around 1952.

Request a factory letter from Smith and Wesson, it's only 30 bucks and will tell you when it was shipped, where it was shipped, how many were made, when the model was in production, and other nifty details.
