I recently purchased a Oly PCR 16. Love the gun and all, but it's really not too ideal for anything beside bench rest shooting. I was considering buying a M4 upper. But I've read the rumor of how Century will no longer be importing in the SAR's and have reconsidered maybe picking up a SAR. So now I'm left with 3 options, and would like to here some feed back on my options.

Option 1) Equip the PCR16 with a Firsh hand guard and vertical grip and a OKO red dot. That way it can pull double duty as a bench shooter with a variable scope at the range, and at home strap on the OKO and vertical grip for home defenc aka SHTF.

Option 2) Buy an M4 upper, and eventually have to buy a lower and all the ARMS goodies for it just like any loyal AR15.com members.

Option 3) Buy a SAR1, because I may not have a chance again picking up one at these prices with the possibility of it doubling in value in the future, and leave my PCR16 alone for doing what it was built to do (bench rest shooting/varmint) and what I initially wanted it to do.

I have $400 burning a hole in my pocket. HELP!

If you don't have a SAR1 I'd say go ahead and get one.

The M4 upper can't do anything more than your regular PCR16. The "cool" factor is the main reason most folks buy an M4 type upper.

If you want a SAR.....get it while you still can.

I'll cast another vote for the SAR1.

The "M4" uppers are slick, but I just couldn't bring myself to follow the M4 crowd. I purchased a Colt 16" M4-styled barrel and wrenched myself an upper. The 16" barrel isn't for me. To make a long story short, I purchased a Bushmaster 20" A2 profiled postban barrel and decided to build myself a postban M16A4 clone. What can I say? The 20" barrels are for me.

The beauty of the AR15 is the ability to swap uppers. If I was happy with a PCR16, I'd opt for another gun THEN purchase a new upper sometime later in life.

You already seem to be content with your AR15 and what it was intended to do for YOU. Mind as well bring a new toy home!

Get an SAR. This is really the only closest thing you're going to get new-in-box to an AKM and still be legal. The VEPR is nice (well, actually, it's VERY nice), but it's built on an RPK receiver which makes it more accurate but also much heavier. When you see how inexpensive and sturdy AK mags are, you'll crap. Like, $6 to $7 a mag and they're like new. They'll also last forever and so will the SAR. The Soviets built the AKM to go 30,000 before a part failure. Not service life (which is over a couple hundred thousand rounds, perhaps much more depending on how you take care of it), but a PART failure. The ammo is almost as cheap as .22LR. Pick a good one and you'll be happy for life.

A few months back I sold a SAR-3 (.223 calibre). It had a Russian red dot scope with a nice looking black stock. VERY nice package and a sweet shooting rifle. I heard the same Century Arms rumor. Get the SAR-1.
Of the three SAR's I'd get the SAR-1. The SAR-2 is that weird calibre and mags are harder to get. The SAR-3 has the same stigma.......if you don't get the proper mags it can be unreliable or at least you'll always have a mag hassle.
Get the SAR-1 but take a good look at it first. Is the gas tube and front sight on straight? You might have "trigger slap" upon firing it but no big deal 'cause it's an easy fix. You get the trigger group from REDSTAR arms.
By and large SAR's are good, solid weapons just a little rough around the edges that's all. Good luck, John

I just got my first AR, and I think it's really cool and I'm spending way too much time looking into ways to upgrade it. But, even with that mindset, I'd still recommend the SAR-1. Can't promise, but I'll bet you'd never regret the decision. They really are fun.

I'm sold! I guess it's time to price them out and compare with some local dealers. Thanks again ya'll. And if there's anyone else out there that has something to throw into this hat, please feel free. Thanks again. I'll post pic's if and when I pick one out this week.

Get the SAR-1, you can always upgrade the AR later.

- just bought an SAR-1. I wanted both an AK and an AR. I was saving up the money but I heard the rumor about Century not importing any more of them and decided to get the AK first.

It isn't particularly beautiful but it works GREAT and seems to be a LOT of fun. I wanted a SAM-7S (beautiful gun!) but if my SAR-1 keeps performing like it has so far then I am glad I got the SAR instead (maybe I can buy the AR sooner since I saved almost $300.)

I think everyone should have both! (AR and AK!)

- watch out for canted FSB and gas tube. FWIW - my furniture matched and I have no "trigger slap" at all. Maybe I just got lucky...
