I just recieved this from a friend. I took two minutes and called each senator on the list.
I simply politely said "Hi. I would like to leave a note for the senator urging a "NO" vote on AB Five Zero."
Some offices asked for city and/or zip and that was all.
I feel much better now...at least I did something... :(
So PLEASE, for the love of god, CA THRers, GET ON THE PHONE!!!
Heck, even if you don't live in CA, call in anyway PLEASE!!!

The California State Legislature's Public Safety Committee is considering a bill (AB50) today that would ban .50 caliber rifles. These are very large (typically 4'-5' long) and heavy (25lb+) rifles used for long range target shooting. Many are single-shot rifles. All are fired from bipods. All are very expensive (the least expensive I've see was around $1,500 - many are 2-4 times that).
I doubt that any of these rifles has ever been used to commit a violent crime. I don't own one (though it might be fun if someone made a lower cost model), and I've never sold one, but I find it frustrating that, at a time when California is facing such serious problems, the legislature is focusing attention on further restricting our second amendment right to own firearms. I don't think banning these will have any impact on crime or terrorism. Many typical hunting rifles are capable of very long range accuracy, more than sufficient for nearly any imagined criminal intent, and if for some reason a criminal or terrorist really wants to use a .50 caliber, it would be easy to bring one in from another state, or just build one (I think many .50s are manufactured by small shops by people who essentially build them one-at-a-time by hand). This is another California law that won't make anyone safer, but will wipe out another (admittedly small) branch of the shooting sports.
This bill is being heard TODAY. I just called each of the legislators listed below and politely urged them to vote "no" on AB50. In each case my call was taken by a real person, and my request was noted, generally along with my name and location. They all appeared to be keeping a tally of these calls. Everyone was polite. It only took me about five minutes to call them all. Totally painless. If you agree with me about this bill, I invite you to call the legislators and say "I'm calling to request that Senator _______ vote no on AB50."
