G96 Gun Treatment

July 31, 2007, 05:16 PM
Cosmoline smoking off of a hot mil surp stock. :)
You can never get it all out anyway.

July 31, 2007, 05:28 PM
My grandfather was a gunsmith after he retired from the USAF, so my Mom loves the smell of Hoppe's no.9.

As for me, I like the smell of canvas and leather - smells like history.

July 31, 2007, 05:41 PM
That's a toss-up between burnt powder (smokeless) and Hoppe's #9

There's something comforting about walking in a (real) gun shop and smelling Ol' #9

But, I like shooting more than cleaning, so Burnt Powder!

July 31, 2007, 05:46 PM
The Remington .22 Match ammo in the yellow package (it says Ely Lmtd.) has the best smell ever when it's fired. I don't know enough about gun powder to know why it might smell so good. I know it's made in England.

July 31, 2007, 05:51 PM
The nitrate-y smell of burned powder.

Least favorite--the smell of cleaning solvents (which give me a headache).

July 31, 2007, 05:51 PM
Burned powder and sagebrush. Takes me back to my childhood :p

Crystal River Charlie
July 31, 2007, 05:55 PM
Hoppe's #9. My childhood sweetheart use to tell her friends that when she wanted attention, she would dab a little behind each ear and I would follow her anywhere.

July 31, 2007, 05:59 PM
I voted "smokeless powder," but there's one in particular: Unique. Smells like flowers and sunshine when burnt. Well, not quite, but it's a danged good smelling powder.

Black Majik
July 31, 2007, 06:01 PM
I love the smell of indoor ranges for the burnt powder. Just gotta watch my intake :D

A lot of people like the smell of Hoppes, I personally can't stand it.

Odd Job
July 31, 2007, 06:11 PM
Well used leather holster. Can't be beat.

July 31, 2007, 06:15 PM
Eley .22LR smoke. Dunno if it's the priming, the powder or the lube, but it's danged good!

July 31, 2007, 06:15 PM
It's a tie between Hoppes 9 and Cosmoline.

July 31, 2007, 06:17 PM
Hoppe's #9

Bazooka Joe71
July 31, 2007, 06:17 PM
Man, we are reaching for good gun related polls now aren't we?:D

Anyway, the clear-cut winner is hoppes #9...I'd wear it as cologne if I could.:D.

Burnt smokeless powder isn't too bad either....Except that ammonia smell that comes from some of my cartridges.

July 31, 2007, 06:34 PM
I voted burnt smokeless powder, but the OLD Hoppe's #9 would've won if it were still around. The newer version just isn't quite as sweet as the old stuff.

July 31, 2007, 06:39 PM
Burned combloc surplus ammunition. It smells different...

July 31, 2007, 06:50 PM
That's a tough one!
For me #1 would be .22 rimfire ammo, then blackpowder.

July 31, 2007, 06:56 PM
The best smell I know is when I open my safe and take a deep breath. Gun leather from many slings, BLO on the Mil-Surp stocks mixed with the aroma of CLP and some #9 working in the most recently fired bores. Wonderful smell...

July 31, 2007, 07:01 PM
The smell of freshly fired paper shotgun shells....

July 31, 2007, 07:12 PM
Wow, Hoppe's no. 9 and burned smokeless powder with no close third. I can understand why Hoppe's no. 9 has appeal especially as a cologne. Burned powder, well, it smells like...victory.

July 31, 2007, 07:36 PM

-The smell of a young lady, sweating in the hot sun, shooting her brand new .22 rifle for the first time,
Sweat, .22 rim-fire, and lemonade breath.

-A young man, with his .22 rifle, smelling of .22 rim-fire, sweat, and Root Beer Breath.

-Smoke of a 28 ga hull being ejected after downing clay, dove or Quail

Hunting Dawgs deserve their own special mention:

-Donut breath dawgs heading out in the wee hours in the truck
-Wet retrievers getting in the blind and shaking the freezing water all over everyone.
-Dawg Farts, told him not to give that dawg Slim Jims :p
-Hot , tired, dusty and dirty dawg, that done good, asleep in one's lap returning from the hunt.
-Dawg may be in the bed of the truck, still the dawg smells of Tomato Juice, used to get rid of Skunk.
He got the bird, got sprayed in the process.

July 31, 2007, 07:38 PM
Real, honest-to-God cordite.

July 31, 2007, 07:50 PM
Favorite smells include some solvents, lubes and gun leather

July 31, 2007, 07:52 PM
The aroma of warm cosmoline as it effortlessly drips from a stock.

July 31, 2007, 07:53 PM
I love the smell of 22LR powder.

Maybe it reminds me of my childhood, I don't know.

July 31, 2007, 08:01 PM
Other as in "NEW!"

July 31, 2007, 08:02 PM
The IMR ether smell

July 31, 2007, 08:03 PM
Clenzoil. Good stuff:)

July 31, 2007, 08:16 PM
Why was I sure that before I looked I knew that Hoppe's #9 was going to be number one ?

I have a couple bottles of old formula stashed away . I think perhaps as years go by the addics will make them worth a fortune ! LOL

July 31, 2007, 08:31 PM
Burned smokeless. That's the smell of a range. Add wildflowers and it's an outdoor range.

July 31, 2007, 08:35 PM
Rembrandt beat me to it.
The smell of freshly fired paper shotgun shells....

July 31, 2007, 08:37 PM
Nothing better than burnt H-110. The smell of hand-held power.

July 31, 2007, 08:38 PM
My favorites are burned smokeless gunpowder, especially shot gun shells and then Hoppes No. 9.

July 31, 2007, 08:41 PM
The smell of a freshly fired .45 acp cartridge.

Redneck with a 40
July 31, 2007, 08:41 PM
I voted Hoppe's #9, nuthin' else like it.:D When I clean my guns, the odor permeates my entire appt for a few hours, I love the smell.:)

July 31, 2007, 08:46 PM
Nothing smells as good as burnt powder, especialy from a .22lr.

July 31, 2007, 08:47 PM
Please forgive me for double-hitting this one but I just remembered a question posed to the Astronauts who walked on the moon..."What does the moon smell like?"

All the Astronauts were Military and had been around things that go BOOM!...and to a man they all said it smelled like burnt powder!

Pick up a shotgun shell that has just left your ejection port, smell it, and experience what the closest heavenly body smells like! Great smell!

July 31, 2007, 09:13 PM
I would be shocked if Hoppe's No. 9 wasn't the most popular.

Bullet Bob
July 31, 2007, 09:23 PM
Rembrandt AND JoeG52 beat me to it - a fired paper shotgun shell. I would like to add though, that's it's best on a cold, crisp day while hunting.

July 31, 2007, 09:27 PM
Hoppe's #9, with out a doubt :D
Sometimes I open the bottle just to smell it :uhoh:

July 31, 2007, 10:21 PM
My favorite smell is that of rotten putrid flesh of a dead animal that I've shot that was so far away...how far do you ask?....so far that it rotted before I could run over there! How's that fer a long range shot, and oh..did I mention that it was at night?:neener:

July 31, 2007, 11:17 PM
However, I voted other , cuz the one smell I like best is in the fall when it smells like Hunting season!!

Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!!

July 31, 2007, 11:31 PM
Voted Break-Free... here's why.

A few months back I had been doing a spot clean on one of my guns. Canít remember which now. Anywho, I dumped the Break-Free CLP soaked patches in the bathroom trash.

Fast forward to the next morning. I was dog ill with something clawing to get out of my stomach in any direction it could. I was firmly ensconced on the throne, in NO CONDITION TO MOVE, when whatever demon was trying to rip me apart started a second front and was running for my throat.

I started to do the reverse peristalsis mambo while seated and realized the last thing I wanted to do was clean Technicolor yawn from the tile. I grabbed the trash can not caring that there was anything in it. I held it right under my face and prepared to let the devil free when the odor of B-F CLP hit me.

The demon was caught short! His violent wrath was quelled. I took another few deep breaths and to my very great surprise, I was HEALED! AMEN! My stomach was no longer upset. All offensive (and I do mean OFFENSIVE!) actions stopped on both fronts. The demons had all been exorcized!

July 31, 2007, 11:45 PM
Maybe we could mix them together, package it and market it. What could we call it?

I personally like the smell of freshly fire shotgun shells. And the squeak of REAL leather. A real metal gun in a real leather holster. Kinda happy stuff for me. Seems like here in my middle age, takes less now to make me happy.

Burned powder.

Hoppe's no. 9 gives me a headache too.

August 1, 2007, 12:17 AM
The old canvas. Not really a 'gun' smell in fact, but nothing beats it.

Did ya ever have an old shelter half as a kid, sleep under one at Ft. Benning (in 1990! Amazed that something so old was still in your TA-50), sit in the back of the wet deuce and a half, and still sniff every time you open your garage, just to make sure--I don't want my kids to miss that smell!

August 1, 2007, 12:34 AM
And to think, all these years, I thought I was weird because the smell of Hoppe's #9 made me feel all warm inside ... But they're all good ... the smell of burnt powder and the aroma of new gunleather ...

For some reason, the scent of Break-Free reminds me of Staff Sergeant Wilson. Hence, not one of my favorite gun-related smells ... Although, all those push-ups paid off in the long run ...

August 1, 2007, 12:36 AM
But, I like shooting more than cleaning, so Burnt Powder!

Well put ! Same here, +1 on Burned smokeless powder.

August 1, 2007, 12:41 AM
Burned blackpowder. I love my smokeless guns (more than the blackpowder guns), but there's just something about blackpowder that makes me like it. Maybe it isn't even the smell. Maybe it's the almost sexual relationship that you get from reloading the muzzle-loaders. Maybe it's all that gunk getting on your hands and the feeling of actually having gotten work done. I don't know. But I like the smell of blackpowder.

August 1, 2007, 12:47 AM
De-leadening solvent, man it smells really sweet, that and black powder are probably my favorite.

ATF a distant third :D

The smell of money from buying all milsurp/combloc stuff.

Tannerite has an interesting odor too.

Burning cardboard placed behind a propane can.

Didn't think about THAT stuff now didja? :)

August 1, 2007, 02:56 AM
Fried squirrel.

August 1, 2007, 03:43 AM
The smell of freshly fired paper shotgun shells....

Same here.

August 1, 2007, 03:52 AM
I smelled this smell from a recently purchased k31. It smelled amazing. Not sure exactly what it was. Perhaps the whole store smelled of this smell, perhaps not, I don't recall. I just remember that the rifle still smelled strongly of it for a few days, and might still smell weakly of it now. Also, the case I stored the rifle in smelled like it. I should have asked the owner what it was, heh. I don't believe it was Hoppe's #9 though, though that isn't a bad smell either. However, whatever this smell is, it comes in first for me. Smokeless or maybe blackpowder second. I actually don't like the smell of cosmoline, heh.

August 1, 2007, 07:53 AM
A paper shotgun shell that's still smoking.

Or maybe roast duck. That's gun related, sort of, if I was there when it was shot.

August 1, 2007, 08:20 AM
burned smokeless powder.

Mr White
August 1, 2007, 09:59 AM
The smell of venison steaks cooking on the grill is #1. Indirectly gun and bow related.

Hoppes and G96 Gun Treatment come in second and third

August 1, 2007, 10:02 AM
what? we cant chose them all???

August 1, 2007, 11:09 AM
I love your survey!

I prefer the smell of fresh, smokeless powder poured from the bottle into the measure hopper.

Hoppe's #9 runs a pretty close second, though.

August 1, 2007, 11:14 AM
Burnt smokeless powder. Nothing like walking into the gun store and the first thing that hit you is that smell. Btw it a gun shop/shooting range.

That and the smell of military surplus stuff.

August 1, 2007, 11:21 AM
I'm also with G96 gun treatment. been around for years.

August 1, 2007, 12:12 PM
I voted burnt smokeless powder, but the OLD Hoppe's #9 would've won if it were still around. The newer version just isn't quite as sweet as the old stuff.

+1 :D

toss up between leather and mil canvas.

Landlocked Pirate
August 1, 2007, 12:22 PM
Smoking paper shotgun shells would have to be No. 1, reminds me of tagging along with my daddy hunting quail.
No.2 would be "WWII mil-surp canvas" because it ALWAYS takes me back to playing army as a kid with my best friend and our fathers' surplus gear in the early 60's after seeing "The Longest Day".

August 1, 2007, 12:30 PM

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet. I love that smell. It smells like history.

Bazooka Joe71
August 1, 2007, 01:11 PM
How H #9 and BSP are neck and neck!

August 1, 2007, 01:31 PM
#1 burnt smokeless powder(not all powder smells good but an empty shotgun shell or a 22 primer usually)

#2 burnt black powder(again doesn't all way smells the same)

#3 hopes #9(too bad it gives my wife a headache)

I have some sub sonic 22 lr made by aguila that stuff stinks.

August 1, 2007, 01:39 PM
I love the smell of lead in the morning, it feels like cancer.

I gotta say the Eezox cleaner stuff has a pleasant smell though i'm not sure if the fumes are poisonous or not, i've been told to use it in good ventilation.

August 1, 2007, 05:22 PM
Napalm in Irac:evil:

August 1, 2007, 05:47 PM
A tie between smokeless powder and gun leather. I couldn't vote for both, so I voted for gun leather (the underdog).

August 1, 2007, 07:03 PM
The smell of smokeless powder smoke is very nostalgic to me.

August 1, 2007, 08:01 PM
Still no name on a concoction of the listed smells...

August 1, 2007, 08:46 PM
I love the smell of gun powder in the morning!!

Hoppe's #9.
