I need to remove the barrel and feed tube on a Win. Model 94 1966 Commemorative to take it to the refinisher. Can I do it myself or do I need a gunsmith? I've taken all of my pistols apart and polished the parts and always have gotten them back together and working better than new, so I'm fairly handy. Does anyone know where I can get diagrams or instructions?

To pull the barrel on any rifle, you need:

A vice or clamping system the will apply great pressure and take a lot of srain and torgue

A block that is hard enough to hold the barrel with out deforming in anyway.

The block needs to be bored to the daimeter of the barrel and then split in two.

Because My vice will do it and there is a flat on the bottom of the post 64 barrels I ussually only use one half of the block to clamp the barrel.

Then you need an action wrench that will hold the action securely, and not mar or scratch it.

Brownells sells all these thing and will have pictures on line of what the sell if you are somewhat handy with tools.

So completely disassemble the action, the extractor fits into a notch in the barrel and with the tooling used you can shear it off with feeling it break! so have the bolt out!

Bottom line: Due to the expense of the equipment, let a pro gunsmith do it.

Attempting to remove or reinstall a rifle barrel with home-made or "expedient" tools will pretty well guarantee a damaged or even ruined rifle.

Real gunsmiths use a special barrel vise that uses a hydraulic jack and split brass rings to lock up the barrel.
A shop vise, no matter HOW big just won't do it.

For the receiver, we use a special commercial action "wrench" that supports and protects the receiver so it doesn't get crushed or bent.

Dfariswheel...yep, exactly what I concluded about a millisecond after I read Big Az Al's post. I'll let the pros handle this one. I have all the AR stuff I need to do a complete build and can't imagine trying to swap a barrel without all the stuff I've invested in.

I was hoping a few screws here, a pin there, a tug there and off she'd come. :rolleyes: Thanks guys, I really appreciate the info! Its an easy decision now.
