I think we might have lost another anti-gun blogger

Robyn Ringler took more than a week off to read the new Harry Potter, and she's not back yet. Honestly, I don't know if I blame her. Not everyone thrives on argument, and everything she posted got smacked around by people with facts to back up their points of view. She really had only one reliably anti-gun commenter, "Jadegold," and that guy posts like your basic troll.

I think most Harry Potter fans read the newest book in a day or less, so that always seemed a little thin.

But, hey, maybe she'll be back.

Who knows? Maybe she read the new Harry Potter, saw that it's basically the story of how Voldemort forced an open civil war by taking control of the Ministry of Magic and trampling on civil liberties, and her brain overloaded. It's bad enough having to hear it from all us overcompensating gun nuts, but from J.K. Rowling? That's unfair!

But I love throwing that at other potterphiles who despise self defense and having the means to do so.

So for those of you not members of the fold just argue it this way, what would have happened if Harry's dad had the Elder wand when YOU KNOW WHO came calling?
:neener:

Then remind them that your (INSERT CARRY GUN HERE) is YOUR Elder Wand.

Well I took a week to read the last book but I only read at night after work, dinner, chores, life, etc.

I LOVE how the books mentions that Harrys Parents (maybe only Dad?) didn't have his wand with him...now if only he would have ccw'd his wand?

I wonder if the writer is pro-self defense or if she doesn't equate wands and guns?

There's a lot of debate on this, even a legal paper on Rowling being a libertarian.

But I find that even if she doesn't do the equation herself, many of the readers when introduced the idea would make that equation.

Of course many may get stymied with the idea of prophecies and curses not transitioning to the real world! :neener:

I think she was stereotyping us as all hunters who didn't like black/latino....
not realizing a lot of us are not hunters and are minority members ourselves
(I felt like a minority when I lived in San Francisco!)

From what I've read, I'm pretty sure Rowling leans more towards socialism than libertarianism. I know she named one of her children after a famous socialist writer, Jessica Somethingoranother. But yes, the Harry Potter series itself is quite anti-establishment.

One of the lessons that I took from the Harry Potter novels was, "Always be prepared." Another was "Always have your defensive weapon (wand, whatever) accessable.

Good books, well written, even if she says that she's a socialist.

“She’ll make a great ex-wife some day.”

“Let courage rise with danger and strength to strength oppose.”

“A Liberal: One who has nothing, and is eager to share it with others.”

“The outcome of this war has already been decided by the quartermaster.”

“Bibo ergo sum (I drink, therefore I am).”

I was hoping that the Harry Potter series would end like this:

Harry and all of his friends are completly surrounded by Voldemort and his army of dark wizards and giants and evil centaurs, etc. There is absolutely no hope left of any of them. Voldemort commands his generals to attack on the count of three, for complete and utter destruction. He gets to one, he gets to two, and all of a sudden, a great trumpet blast sounds through the air, and a huge force of American wizards, all strong and powerful, flies across the horizon and save all of the European wizards from complete destruction. But, alas, it was not to be...

if we are lucky well find this anti gun blogger on the harry potter fansite forums trying to get people to give up their super deadly MAGIC WANDS. If we coudl be so lucky,

wonder what that would do to her "credibility"? ANd why does it take a supposed adult so long to read harry potter anyway?

It is going to take generations to weed out people that immediately turn to the government for help with their problems. I literally cannot believe how dependent she is -- asking why the President hasn't done anything, or why we "tolerate a lack of help."

It's a daunting task.

Why are you even wasting time with this person? She's a hack for the Brady Bunch. Unless it's part of some effort to shut her down with counterpoints I don't see any use in arguing with her. She's mentally ill.

because other people will read it who may be convertable.

Well, I don't know what stripe Rowling is, but the message in her books is "learn to defend yourself". There's a "Defense Against the Dark Arts" class, and when the "governement" (Ministry of Magic) becomes useless in the face of Voldemort, Harry forms "Dumbledore's Army", which, it turns out

(MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD)

...is absolutely key in rallying all the forces of Good in the final battle. The ministry of magic played no role in the final battle.

Unless the president is handing out coupons for free guns , I don't think there is any "help" he can provide . More laws or legislation , as we all know , doesn't deter those bent on doing crime . She seems to think there is some magical cure by way of laws etc that will keep people from becoming victims of crime , but overlooks the biggest deterrent of all , an armed citizen .

"We know legislation works. We know stopping illegal guns at the source works. We know tough criminal penalties for illegal gun possession and crimes committed with guns work. We know involving communities in solutions works."

If all of this has worked, then why is there still a problem? She can't see the forest for the trees.

She's not only back, she's refused to allow most of my comments to be posted. Not sure why. I left a comment asking her to send me a message explaining why she's doing it, but it may take awhile.

She sends email through a cutout, Jason Bourne-style, so gun nuts like me can't track her down and murder her, so there's likely a built-in delay.

(I'm not kidding, by the way. I've gotten one email from her before, and it came from one of the editors at the Albany newspaper that hosts her blog.)

Blogs with moderated comments are really annoying. There is a long delay before the first comments appear, and they are usually all the same. I guess it cuts down on endless noise like on the Brady blog as people respond to one another, but I have way too much ADD and Internet impatience to tolerate this kind of policy.
