I have a chance to buy a Ruger Old Army, in decent shape, at a good price. I jus saw where an outfit, here, in the Old Dominion, is selling a .45 Colt cylinder for the Old Army. Thus it will shoot, black powder round ball loads, and, with the swap of the cylinder, modern, .45 Colt rounds.
Whatdoya'll think??

If the price is right, and you want one, go for it. It is certainly the best blackpowder revolver made from an engineering/mechanical standpoint. It isn't historically accurate, but if you are looking for a shooter, it is the best there is.
I owned one years ago. In fact it was the first handgun I ever purchased since I could buy it at age 18. I later sold it because it shot high even with the rear sight down all the way. I regret that. I want another one, but I don't want one anywhere near bad enough to pay the going rate for one. I just don't shoot blackpowder revolvers enough to justify it. I own a couple repo BP revolvers and I shoot them at most, once a year.

I would have bought one of those conversion cylinders too, but darn they're expensive. BTW, the Ruger Old Army was my very first handgun too. Bought it at age 18 for $175 from Gil Hebard. Funny but I ordered from them b/c Caliph wanted me to be 21 and I didn't want to wait... so I mailed ordered it. :D

I always ''made do'' with my ol 44 Colt 1861 repro ..... and envied the other guys with Old Armies ... great guns. I think right now, despite little if any cap and ball shooting these days .. I'd leap at a good example if price was Ok .... and love the idea of the alternative cylinder.:)

The conversion cylinder works well in my Old Army. My only complaint was its cost. Believe there are threads on this in the black powder section.
