I cannot find a source for this George Washington Quote:

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
George Washington
First President of the United States

Thanks.

Supposedly false according to this site:

http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/George.Washington.Quote.71A2

This one does attribute it to him, but with no references:

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/g/george_washington.html

This site says it's probably bogus:

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/George_Washington

The SAF website says it's false also:
