MA: Lock up your ammo?

I was reading that thread about the locking up of the ammo and I was wondering, do you legally have to lock your ammo up in the peoples other republic?
Becuase, like I said in the other thread, I might have a bullet or a shell lying around the house, just becase they are small.
So if a cop walked in and saw a shell on the counter would I be in like serious trouble?

well if your state wants you to lock it up, possibly get a house search over that.
IF you had social service worker came by for a chit chat youd be in big trouble for child endangerment id guess.
But the thing that most people dont understand is, if your ammo is supposed to be locked up seperately from your weapon, how can you legally load your gun to hunt or protect yourself?

Unless the cop had a warrant or you invited him in, what would they be doing in your house? The only way a cop can (legally) do a search of your premises is if they have probable cause to search, or have a warrant, or if you let them in. If you do not let them in, and they can't look through a window or an open door and see anything suspicious (drugs on a coffeetable, huge blood smear on the floor, a half-nude woman chained on the floor crying, etc) and they don't have a warrant, they're SOL. If they do come in without satisfying those criteria, they can find anything they want, but it's inadmissable. And you can own them in court.
Sorry I can't answer the specific question, I just want to make that part about cops in houses clear, if it wasn't already.

I live in MA, and the firearms laws make me want to :banghead:
AFAIK, the requirement to lock up ammo is a fire code, and is separate from all of the other firearms laws in MA. So, I don't know how serious a violation it is to not lockup ammo, and how that affects your permits and renewals. I don't take a chance and simply lock everything up.

Right... And maybe they'll be checking what you are doing in your bedroom too?

Well I dont know I go to college in kansas and we found a .22 centerfire bullet with the primer in it all ready to go. The RA saw it since we left it out on the counter and did not even care he just asked me to either keep it or throw it out. Not sure if people in MAss would be that laid back your best bet is to just buy a plastic rubbermaid bin and put a 2 dollar master lock on it.

As Target said it is more of a fire code issue but you are required to store ammunition and powder "in original containers and such containers shall be stored in a locked cabinet, closet or box when not in use."
And as usual cities/towns can attach their own by-laws and ordinances so it's best to keep them locked up.
Here's a quick link to the FAQ section of GOAL's site with some info: http://www.goal.org/misc/faq/powder.html

I can't imagine that even CA is worse than this. They put a school on lockdown for half a day after somebody found a .22 round in the parking lot. Even called in dogs to search the entire school. It's nuts.
I used to carry a shotgun in the back of my car to school every day. Everybody did.
I hate this place and will escape as soon as I am able
