paintballdude902,
I do not suggest shooting slugs through a side by side. Slugs can have an effect on the barrels and the P.O.I. may not be the same.

I suggest purchasing a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 with a rifled slug barrel, for bears. :) A pump action is more reliable for repeat fire, with dangerous game. Whether you use a barrel with iron sights or a cantalever for a scope will depend on the distances that you'll be hunting.

If you're set on getting another set of double barrels, you could send an e-mail to Remington and/or EAA (European American Armory) and ask if they offer double barrels.

Good luck with your choices!
Good hunting, Bowhunter57

Slugs will fire just fine out of a side by side, I do it. However, the barrels are regulated to overlap. With my Spartan 20 gauge, the right barrel shoots left about 8" at 50 yards and the left barrel shoots right about 8". So long as I remember that at that range, I can put 'em into about a 3' circle. My old 12 gauge with 28" fixed mod/full barrels overlaps about 2" at 50, not quite as bad. Now, shorter ranges, less overlap. Yeah, that ain't the greatest thing and limits me to about 50 yards, but with foster slugs, I'm pretty limited anyway. I'll take that limitation, though, considering the uses of the gun as a bird, game getter. If I wanna shoot a solid, I'd take a rifle every time over a slug gun. Slug guns are, at best, a compromise and to be used in states that don't allow rifles IMHO. Outside of such states, why would I want a shotgun over a rifle for hunting? As I see it, slugs would come in handy for stopping big game at close ranges. That's it, that's what they're good at. 100 yards, they've pretty much spent what they had. My 7 mag will carry more power at 500 yards than a slug at 100, easily. That's what rifles do best. If you need a rifle, buy one.

I think the side by side makes a fine camping, survival tool for the wild outdoors, will enable you to put small game over the campfire much more easily than a rifle, will shoot slugs in self defense. And, why would you want SHORTER barrels in a field gun? There is no reason to go with shorter barrels in a field gun. My Spartan is a 20" gun because I wanted the barrels shorter for storage in travel. I can understand that. But, I'd not worry about it for your uses. Just get some slugs and test 'em (be ready to get kicked in 12 gauge, trust me) and live happy with that gun. Think of it this way, it's more compact by 6 inches anyway than a repeater due to the lack of that long action.

I've practiced with my spartan enough to know I can hit a hog or deer just fine out to 50 yards. I'll never carry the gun deer hunting, but as an outdoor survival tool, that could come in handy. And, with the 20" barrels, it'll come apart and stow in a back pack, which is cool. My primary use for the gun, though, is doves and traveling with it locked in the top box of my Honda GoldWing. That's why I really wanted it. I'll be testing it soon. :D

If you're going bear hunting (I'm assuming black bear), just get yourself a Marlin 336 in .30-30, MUCH better bear hunting tool than any shotgun. Load that sucker with Hornady lever evolution and take bear to 250 yards plus. OR, there are many other more powerful rifle calibers, not that the .30-30 can't do the job on a blacky. Me, I'd use my Remington M7 stainless .308 Winchester, my favorite hunting rifle. If you're HUNTING bear in a state that doesn't allow rifles (I'd move), then maybe there is a case for a pump slug gun with a rifled barrel and saboted slugs. the side by side isn't the choice for pure hunting situations, I'll agree, in such a circumstance. I like shotguns for birds and rabbits, but when I hunt bigger game, I want a rifle. Texas ain't one of those states with stupid laws against rifles. Then again, if I did live in one of those states, they usually allow black powder and I do have a .50 cal Hawkin hunter carbine. :D And, I can back that one up with my Ruger Old Army.

Well, if you're talkin' handy firearm for multi purpose on the trail, self defense, what not, there's no better IMHO than a twice pipe. You can load one with buck or slug and the other for small game or whatever is the job and, in effect, have a drilling or combo gun. If I were actually HUNTING bear, I'd rather be armed with the rifle.

Most eveyone here would tell you not to use buck on a bear, but at close range in the defense scenario, I'd think it'd be effective centered about the head. I don't know if you'll ever have to worry about a bear on foot, much less mounted, but I guess it don't hurt to be prepared. :D Anyway, I wouldn't lose sleep over the extra 8" of barrel. That gun is still very useful. Only reason I wanted the 20" barrels is so they would fit in the trunk of my GoldWing motorcycle. I'd really rather have 26 or 28" barrels for proper balance of the gun, but it's a trade off. I have other guns, just wanted a motorcycle travel gun when I got the Spartan. It is neat to look at with those 20" barrels. "Wyatt Earp" was on AMC again this morning...LOL. Besides, I already have an old twice pipe 12 with 28" barrels, so that niche is filled anyway. That old 12 has taken a LOT of game. I really like the Spartan's versatility with the interchangable choke tubes, though.

mc-i do alot of hikinh and riding near a bear sanctuary and around here we get blacks up too 950 or so (biggest confirmed i have heard of)

i can normally dispatch the bears with a big stick throwing it at them and but some of the bigger ones i just go artound because i dont want to take a chance

ever since that poor kid was killed by a black a few spring breacks ago on the other end of teh state i have been alot more carefull especially when i was small game hunting and dont have a bigger gun

950 would be a new world record. Normally, a 500 lb bear is HUGE. But, yeah, I'd carry a big stick in territory like that regardless. I'd keep a slug in one barrel just in case when small game hunting there. :D

Black bear have gotten big, but fortunately they're not normally agressive. But, you carry a gun for bear in bear territory for the same reasons you carry a CCW down town, just in case....

From the site http://www.bear.org/Black/Black_Bear_Facts.html

Adult Weights: Wild male black bears of breeding age usually weigh between 125 and 500 pounds, depending upon age, season, and food. Very well fed bears can be heavier. The record is 880 pounds in Craven County, North Carolina, and a close second from northeastern Minnesota weighed 876 pounds on September 5, 1994. Wild females usually weigh between 90 and 300 pounds with the heaviest known female weighing 520 pounds in northeastern Minnesota on August 30, 1993. Black bears in captivity may exceed these records.

BTW, here's my Spartan. :D It'll be slaying dove in less than a month, woohoo! :D

mc the record was taken because it was shot in vanceboro while it was eating out of a dumpster and it was baiting

they said it could not be counted because they didnt know how long it had been feeding out of the dumpster

880 ot 950, I ain't gonna wanna go mano-a-mano with it. :D

Pretty chicken they wouldn't give it a record. I mean, who's to say that 880 lb bear wasn't regularly feeding out of dumpsters and the guy just happened to stumble on him in the deep woods? BIG bear never-the-less, scary big. I've never actually seen one much over 300 lbs in the wild and those are big enough you don't really wanna tangle with 'em. Be like taking on an NFL lineman armed with knives on each finger and in his mouth. LOL
