I have a J frame .38 spcl #J9602xx. Inside on the cylinder arm is Model 36 and 17x39 and A8. This is nickel plated with wood grips. There a couple very tiny marks but it looks almost new. My question is - if you were selling it what would you realistically want to get? Thanks in advance.

If you could post a photo or two it would help. Does it have a 2" or 3" barrel? And do you have the original box and tools?

I don't have any pics and it would take a close-up to see any blemish at all. I believe it to be a 3 inch barrel and there is no box. I think it dates to the early 80s.

$300 - $375, probably more towards the high end with a 3" barrel and nickel.

According to The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Supica & Nahas), your serial number dates to somewhere around 1982. A call to the factory can result in a more exact date for your particular model 36. Prices can vary quite a bit, but around here model 36s in very good to excellent condition I've seen selling lately for around $300-$350. As Will5A1 indicated above, a 3" barrel (instead of more common 2") or your nickel finish may increase the value some.

Does it look like this one?

If so, I'd think closer to the $375 to $400 range would be right. YMMV depending on your location. I don't think I'd part with mine though, even for $400.

It looks very much like that one except the wood in the grips is different, lighter and with checkering.
