Greetings and salutations, folks.

You'll recall my trip up to Chicago on July 21st to turn in a bunch of scrap metal for what amounted to $100 bills.

The thread, "A BEST BUY in Chicagoland: Selling (s)crap metal at a gun turn in" can be found here (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=291523).

Long story short: Some unnamed corporate sponsor coughs up about $600,000 in pre-paid credit cards to be given away for guns in any condition on July 21. A number of Guns Save Life members donated various clunkers and non-firing pieces of (s)crap metal and on that fateful day, I ventured to the heart of the not-so-nice part of Chicago and traded a total of 23 guns for 23 $100 pre-paid credit cards, netting $1700 for Guns Save Life.

We thought it fitting to use that money to sponsor ammunition for the NRA Youth Shooting Camp this weekend at Darnall's in Bloomington.

This is the longest-running NRA camp of its type in the nation!

Not only that, but we used most of five of the cards to buy two CZ rifles to be given away tomorrow to two of the lucky young people at the camp!

Anyway, here are some of the photos from today. I took a break from my lead instructor on the pistol line during the third segment of the day (of four) to visit the four stations and capture some of the spirit of fun and excitement of the event.

I had to work Friday, so I missed the sessions held then on Shotguns, Air-rifles and education done on Guns Save Life's shooting simulator... which included lessons in game anatomy done while the kids tried their hands at shooting various game animals, both static and in video. Also, some of the young people got a primer on shooting trap by practicing on the simulator to learn how to "lead" the birds and what their patterns look like. Also hunting ethics and rules in "shoot - don't shoot" scenarios.

So, sorry, no pix of all that...

But here are the ones from today!

"THANK YOU FOR SAVING A LIFE"... That's right. We're GUNS SAVE LIFE!

Approximately 85-90 kids were participating this year.

Today's sessions were on pistols, rifles, archery and muzzle loading.

I'll post more Monday of the events tomorrow if all goes well - including some close ups of the two guns that Mayor Daley's pet program bought to give away to CHILDREN! Oh noes!

Great story and pictures. Thats just the kind of grassroots action we need more of. I sure would like to see the faces of Mayor Daly and the people that paid for those credit cards if they could see this. Wonderful! :D

Kind of reminds me of the BSA national jamboree. Thats where i fired my first muzzle loader a pain to load up but real fun to shoot. Also fired 20 gauge shotguns, air rifles, archery, tomahawks, throwing knives, all that fun stuff gotta love scouting. Safety was stressed heavily during all these events for instance they never let those of us doing black powder be in groups larger than 5.

I would like to hear from some of the other members who said what the OP did was a bad idea. You know who you are. You are wrong.

Templar,
Is that Phil "Last names starts with a 'K' but has every other letter in the alphabet in it", from the Howell Shooting Club, in the two pictures where they are 'scoring' the rifle targets ??? I work at the Howell Clubs NRA Shooting Sports Camp every year and it sure does look like him.

For anyone who has not volunteered (or taken taken their kids to an NRA camp), I can't think of better way to spend a weekend with your and other kids. The only time I've seen the kids frown is when we have to shut down for inclement weather.

Good on You Templar. I think we might have to find some junk to turn in to have rifles and shotguns to give away at Howell next year.

Don't let the nay-sayers get you down, you're out there actually does in the work to protect and pass-on or RKBA rights and 2A hertiage while a bunch of intraweb commando's who have never raised more then a finger complain about your methods. Keep up the good work !!!!

Yes, Scout, that's him. I sat next to him for a couple of the meals. Super nice guy.

And yes, I'll give you a big +1 about it being a great place to take your kids and/or volunteer. Simply phenomenal... well, at least this one is. I haven't been to any of the others, but I know there is Olympic level instruction at some of the stations at this one.

And some of these kids are already shooting competitively! It's nice to say that I had a hand in teaching them some of the fundamentals of handguns a few years ago...
