I'm looking at Tantal's PK-AS red/black dot sights for my WASR but not sure which to pick. (http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/collimator.html)

http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/media2/ak105_062.jpg

PK-AS-S - sits lower and to the left of the bore, allowing iron sights to be used
PK-AS-V - sits over the bore but much higher; supposedly designed for "western" shooters who are not used to a left-offset sight

Which should I pick? I really think the over-the-bore design adds way too much height to the rifle and also obscures the irons. However, I'm wondering how awkward the left-offset sight will be.

Anyone use a sight with a slight left offset like these?

Any speculation? I can still shoot with my dominant right-eye, correct?

I know the Kobra dot sights have a good reputation.

I have a Kobra on mine, but if I were going to go with a PK-AS, I'd personally go with the lower of the two. The tall one is WAY high, as you point out, and is probably quite a bit heavier (more mount, and more stiffness required). And it seems to me that having the scope offset slightly to the left would be quite comfortable to shoot. You would still be shooting with your right eye.

You will have to think through how to sight it in, though. For me, if it's offset 1.5 inches to the left, I'd sight it in so that the sight axis and bore axis were parallel in the lateral plane (i.e., POI stays 1.5 inches to the right of POA at any distance); it'd be off to the left a little at close range, but at least you wouldn't have to calculate lateral POI/POA shift at a distance (that could get squirrely, it seems to me).

Training, Training, Training.

or

Practice, Practice, Practice.

Get the one you want, and put some time behind it.

Have y'all had any trouble getting hold of the Tantal guy? I tried to email him for the current price list and got my email returned as undeliverable.
I wanted to get one of those Kobra sights.

What email address are you using?

This is the one I have:

tantal@sbcglobal.net

I love my Kobra; ordered mine from Tantal as well.

I have a PK-AS-S, as I did not like the high-over-the-bore position of the -V. It is a good sight, but the left-side offset requires some acclimation. It's not bad, at all, but it is different.

you can still use your right eye. Allegedly you can use your left, and I've done it a few times, but I find the head position required for this to be somewhat uncomfortable. Not sure I'd want to try it rapid fire, or on the move, as the gun and sight seems to occlude a major percentage of your FOV. That's just an off-the-cuff thought, though.

I have the PK-ASV version. I don't find the height to be too objectionable.

I'd have to try both out side by side, but decided the 'V' version to be more "normal" than the offset.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.
