Has anyone ever used cast lead bullets in .50 BMG? Seems like with a custom mold on the order of 800-900 grains with .500 S&W gas checks might make for some affordable practice ammo.

I could be wrong on this but I believe you would get very bad barrel leading and it would be a real pain to clean. From what I've read (take it with a grain of salt) a .30-30 shoots cast lead about as fast as cast lead should be shot.

Some of the guys over at fcsa.org have cast lead bullets.

The price of a 50bmg mold is around $250 and the sizing die ran another couple of hundred. You also needed gas checks.

IIRC there was severe bore leading if you got the bullet above 2200 fps.

The conclusion was that unless you shoot alot and keep it downloaded, it wasn't worth it for the average shooter
