Reloading 12 gauge - Cheaply?

I'd like to start handloading some buckshot rounds in 12 gauge... as cheaply as possible.

Is there a kit that would knock out the primer, reseat a primer and resize the shell only? Even using a mallet.... I'm not talking about massive quantities.

Also, what is the difference in the wads? I see all sorts of wads listed, which should I buy? Is there one that would work for 1oz of buckshot as well as a .690 diameter lead ball for when I just want to knock a big hole in something?

Thanks!

Lee used to make a basic kit, just like you describe. I've got one that I've had for more years than I can remember, but I don't know if they still make them or not.

Before you start this project, you should invest in the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manual. The answers to all your questions are in that manual, plus answers to many more. You have to be careful when loading shotshells to not mix components, like you can with metallic cartridges. Since shotgun shells don't have the strength of brass cases, and shotgun barrels are relatively thin, you have to watch your pressures more closely. The manual will tell you exactly the combinations you need for each load.

Hope this helps.

Get a copy of the Lyman Manual. It'll have all the info and some recipes for both buck shot and slug loading.

Also check out www.reload-nrma.com for info/links.

As far as tools, the Lee Loader will work. You can still find them on evil-bay, at least for now.

Since you stated low volume, a Lee Load-All might be a better choice. Also gives you a chance to work up other loads (for say clay target and hunting) if you get the urge. Good tool to learn on. Normally can be had for not much more then the "Use a Mallet Loader" and more versiatle.

And like Fred said, shotgun reloading is different then metallic. You must use the components listed in the manufacturers recipes as pressures change dramatically with changes in components.

The Lee Load-all II does a fine job for lower volume reloading, and IIRC I got mine new for about $40
