I see a 1 cm wide mark in the chambers in my guns, but I'm not sure they are .38 special carbon stains.
How wide are these usually?

Could be the chamber "shoulder" that prevents loading longer cartridges.
Modern revolvers have a slight shoulder in the chamber.
Best way to tell what's there is to buy a bronze chamber cleaning brush from Brownell's and scrub the chambers.
The Brownell's bronze chamber brush is a special, extra-stiff bristle, over-sized brush that really cleans a chamber out, WITHOUT damaging the chambers, and works better than using an over-caliber bore brush.
DO NOT use a stainless brush for this.
