Hey folks... I just got a Tac Star saddle for my Mossy 500 (7+1) Home Security System. I'm looking for any input you all have on my defense plan.

I live in a mountain rural situation in a very small house with several other small houses on the same property. My first priority is intruder defense (not something I'd relish), second is chicken defense, and third is possible deer hunting (in season, if I had a permit).

My planned loadout is 7 buckshots (no +1 for extra safety) in the pipe, plus 4 birdshot and 2 slugs on the saddle. If there is an intruder, I've got a heavy load of buckshot. Of course, I would do everything I can to avoid shooting a person, and a cell phone is a brilliant defense... but I'd do what I need to in order to save myself and my neighbors' lives. If there is a chicken raiding critter, and I have a spare moment, I'll drop all the buckshot on the ground and load up the 4 birdshots in order to reduce danger of over penetration and noise. The 2 slugs are available for potential deer or if an intruder situation shoud require it.

Ideally, if I'm not too rushed when opening my gun safe, I'll put my super compact Taurus pt111 pro with 2 full 10rd clips of 9mm in my pocket and / or my 4" Heritage Rough Rider .22 6 shooter in my other pocket.

Currently I'm using a Petzl halogen headlamp, but I just ordered an ATI flashlight mount.

I can't say that any of the other tacticool mods appeal very much to me, I mainly want the ability to more effectively defend against 2-leggers and chicken raiders simultaneously. The saddle and the flashlight is all I need for that without looking like a gun nut in court... god forbid it should come to violence.

I noticed that the saddle has a pretty tight grip on the shells, so I am keeping them brass side down and pushed down a ways for an easier grip on them. Has anyone figured out a very efficient way to use the saddle?

Hows my plan sound?

A light sounds like a good idea. 'Specially because you may have to run outside in the dark to find 'yotes or whatever.

The only thing that's killed some chickens so far was a vampire skunk! He'd bite their heads off one at a time for several nights in a row. Then... one very dark early morning, he met my mossy....

Later on we found out that he had burrowed a big tunnel behind their coop. We've had other skunks, but none that bothered the chickens any... so I've left em be. I won't shoot anything that isn't at least trying to kill them.

Your plan appears pretty sound. What kind of critters are the most common chicken eaters? Is it mainly 'yotes and skunks? The best advice is use what's comfortable to you. My buddy always takes his single shot .410 and a mixed box of slugs and 000 buck when he's out with his cows.
