An OLD gun-in-school story

I got this tale from a friend of mine who is crowding 72. He went to school in a little village near the St. Lawrence River in NY.

His father ran a resturant and raised some great chickens for the restuarant in the 1940s. His big chicken pen happened to be out back of the schoolhouse and fairly close. Chicken hawks were a menace and cut into the profits.

The solution to the problem was that my buddy took a loaded shotgun to school and parked it just inside the door. When he heard squawking from the hen yard, he'd drop his studies, run and grab the gun and blast away at the hawks.

And nobody seemed to give a rat's rear at this little distraction three or four times a day. He never hit a hawk, but scared a bunch of them.

Can you imagine doing that today?
