Help Me Pick My Next Rifle. Please.

After seeing Tamaras' collection of guns, I'm feeling like my 35+ handguns stack up pretty well but my rifle collection is sorely lacking. So I'm in the market for a new rifle and want opinions & ideas from YOU!

Criteria:

--Must be black.
--NOT a carbine. I have an AR & an AK.
--Capable of reasonable accuracy to 3-400 yards without silly money on improvements
--Must be an active military caliber, preferably 308
--Must be semi-auto, magazine fed.
--Costs less than $2000 (Hopefully MUCH less, but I'm willing to step up for a quality firearm), new OR used in excellent condition

BONUS: Recommend a good scope for 300 yds that costs less than the rifle!

Finally, I would really prefer that this gun be ILLEGAL in California, since I don't want any skinny-butted, white-striped, mall-security-rat, freakezoids showing up posting pictures of a better gun than I just bought with carbon fiber furniture all over it. Ahem.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

FAL, HK91/G3, M1A (with a synthetic stock since you said it HAD to be black :neener: )

My choice would be the M1A. Scout model maybe?

Given the criteria you have listed I too would recommend a FAL. An almost infinite number of variations can be had if you go with a DSA, or perhaps a good used pre-ban SAR-48 or original FN 50.00 would fill the bill.

It's hard to go wrong with a DSA FAL.

You can't go wrong with the FAL. You have many options, including like others have mentioned a DSA rifle. I think the DSA rifles are over priced. Get yourself a kit, the required number of U.S. made parts, and have a good gunsmith to assemble and parkerize the rifle if you don't want to do it. You can do all this for well under $1000 and have a very good FAL.

Since your in Arizona, check out Arizona Response Systems. (http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/)

If you stop by the FAL Files, (http://www.falfiles.com/forums/) you find a wealth of FAL info. Also, Mark Graham of ARS has a very good reputation and can build you a quality FAL or you can purchase one from him.

Myself and many others have dealt with Mark and ARS and they're top notch.

Looks like I'm getting a new FAL.

BTW--The local gunstore that handles my FFL transfers also recommended ARS, so I'll be giving them a call.

Before I do, though....

Any one have any thoughts on an Armalite AR-10 as an alternative??

Thanks again,

Good choice in the FN-FAL. I was just about to suggest it.
