Alot of the hodgdon cowboy action loadign data has the 44 russian putting a 200 grain slug out of the barrel then a 38spcl can put a 158-180 grain slug out of in that reloading data tables.

If the 44 russian still meets alot of the popular self defense rounds, can it still be used as a small animal hunting round?

If you mean rabbits, squirrels, and etc, when you say "small animals"..., sure. The .44 Russian was considered an excellent target load in its time, and I am told that the .44 special was introduced to compete with it first as a target round. I know of folks who hunt rabbits with the .45 ACP round, so why not?
