I have a beautiful model 12 winchester that is all original and I would like to remove the plug in the tube without marring the finish. Is this easy or tough? I have never tried and want as much info as possible before attempting.
Thanks in advance. E.

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking how to remove the plug in the mag tube that restricts the number of rounds in the mag tube.
There are two screws at the end of the mag tube that holds in the end.
Find a screw driver the properly fits these screws. I use a hollow ground gun screwdriver kit that is specifically make for guns.
Step one, unscrew the two screws mentioned earlier. Care is needed to avoid marring the screws or the tube.
Step two, push the large pin at the end of the mag tube from upper right to lower left (facing from the muzzle end). Under the bottom of the pin is a spring, use the screw driver to push the spring into the pin and at the same time continue to push the pin from upper right to lower left. This will allow you to take the pin all the way out of the mag tube. The end cap can go flying from the force of the mag spring. Again, use caution here.
The plug should just be a wooden dowel that will fall out of the mag tube.

remove the take down pin....remove two small front mag tube end cap retainer screws while holding the end cap in so the mag tube spring doesnt throw the cap across the room...remove cap and the spring will come out along with the wood plug....put back together....dont bugger the screws...dont use to big of a screw driver or you will scratch the blue off the the mag tube around the screws....
