I came into posession of about 500 rounds of IMI 7.62x51 NATO ammunition, and I was wondering if anyone had had experience with it. Good? Bad? Ugly?
The headstamp is IMI 7,62 71 or 72
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Rule of thumb is that any 7.62 nato surplus, if it's been stored properly, is good. One possible exception is Indian stuff which purportedly sucks.

IMI is the best, if it has been stored well. (Israel has always taken ammo seriously)

Someone's gonna say it, so let me get it out of the way early....
It's horrible. At best, it will only misfire. However, you are far more likely to get Squibs or a Kaboom-- and likely in your first magazine of shots.
I will be happy to take all 500 rounds off your hands for the generous price of $0.10 per round and I'll even pay shipping. You should thank me for having so little concern for my own safety that I would be willing to take this timebomb off your hands. :)
Joking aside, I concur with General Geoff.

Thanks for the replies, guys. The brass on some rounds is a bit tarnished/discolored, and I can tell it's de-linked MG ammo. Is that a problem or just a cosmetic defect?
JWarren, thanks for your kind offer, but I'm sure I can dream up some creative ways of disposing of my own ammo :neener:

For that much ammo it would be worth getting a tumbler and some media and clean it up if it is tarnished. Although the odds are if your chamber is nice and clean youll never have a problem.

Tarnished (dark brown/brown) = OK
Corroded (blue/green) = Junk
