Does anyone have a dedicated home defense handgun?

How many out there have a handgun that is only used as a home defense gun and not a carry gun? If you use it for targets, that is fine but what I am asking is, do you have a handgun that you use for home defense but not for carry?

If you do, what is it? This is on the handgun board so don't list shotguns or rifles.

I keep a Beretta 92fs with nite sights and a factory pre-ban mag. I don't carry it anymore because it is too large but it makes a perfect home defense gun.

Mine is a Ruger Speed Six. I keep a flashlight right next to it.
It is actually my wife's gun; she is familiar with it and isn't afraid to use it. It requires only gross motor skills to operate when awakened at 2:00 in the morning.

It does range time occasionally and stays in the house the rest of the time.

Good question firestar.

Lot of (most) folks don't carry at all, yet many still seem to buy small or compact handguns for the "dedicated sit in drawer" till needed task.

I guess you can make somewhat of an arguement that a shorter barrell makes for easier weapon retention, but still seems a lot of advantages of a full size gun are overlooked in favor of the single advantage of concealabilty that even the purchaser admits will never be used.

Of course in this state we can't carry, but even if we could I think the Ruger 97 would be a little big for carry (for me- I know others do carry it) but 9 rounds of .45 is pretty good for home defense!

Blueduck, Ayoob makes a good argument for the shorter HGs being harder to take from someone. I usually keep a J frame around for unknown visitors - sits in the back pocket just fine when I open the door. Ten (+) years and nobody has noticed.

Glock 35 with mag extensions for 20 rd capacity plus an M3 light. I leave this one set up for HD (mag ext and light) and carry its little brother (G27). Its a little large for carry although i do have a nice FIST holser for it, plus i prefer not to handle my loaded HGs any more than necessary. So i leave the G27 in its holster when i put it on or put it up and the G35 lays easy to grab in its location sans a holster. Both are always loaded.

My wife's HD gun is a Walther P-1. She really likes the smaller grip of that gun. I don't think she would be comfortable with the larger grip of the Beretta.

I don't think the longer bbl is an issue in a handgun unless you have a really long bbl like a 8 3/8" or something. If someone is that close to you in your house, you are in a hand to hand situation and you probably are in deep doo-doo.:D I like a shorter bbl most of the time but I think that advantages of the longer bbl (4-6") makes up for the downsides for a hose gun. It will have a little less muzzle flash and less recoil and will also point better. Those things may be very important in a home invasion situation because of the darkness, you don't want to get blinded by the flash and you may not be able to see the sights so the pointing factor might be a plus.

All of my home defense handguns are VERY dedicated to what they do. :)

Actually, though, I'm not sure if you would consider bowling pin shooting or steel plate matches "target shooting."

I consider those good practice with a defensive handgun, and it's the primary reason (OK, secondary, as I have a LOT of fun shooting those matches) why I shoot them.

Interesting that the Beretta is mentioned the most in this thread. They seem to really be one of those "love it or hate it" type of guns.

Right this minute, resting in the drawer at bedside is an S&W M19 4", with two 158 LSWCHP+P up first, followed by four 158 gr. mag loads. There is a spare speed loader alongside, as is a Browning HP loaded with 124 gr. Gold Dot JHPs. Both in same drawer.

Always two serious handguns, ever since I got remarried.

We love our S&W wheel guns, and have quite a few others, but these are the "dedicated" PD guns that stay in the bedroom at night.

None of our guns are for daily carry in our home state of Maryland, since our politicians have chosen to give our criminally inclined citizens every advantage and prohibited law-abiding citizens from carrying outside of our homes (subject to a few exceptions that nobody I know can squeeze through). We can lawfully carry in some other states, however, and have a S&W 386 and 342 for concealed carry purposes, mostly while backpacking.
