Thoughts on the Silicon impregnated sleeves???

I have heard different things on these. So what are your thoughts on the Silicon impregnated sleeves??? I think I read one time that one fellow thought it actually ruined his rifles metal from one. I have had recommendations to keep rifles in these especially if in the foam lined rifle cases. What say you all?

I would only use a dry one. I always heard not to leave the silicone impregnated rag out of the storage case because they hold in moisture which could lead to rust.

Open cell foam will certainly hold moisture and I'd slip one on for sure if I was going to store in a foam case, although I'd try to just not store in a case... I can't see it ruining the metal. Maybe some sort of staining of the wood but I've never seen it and its not like they're drippy with silicone.

But the gun cloth is already holding moiture.

If you are talking about gun socks -- I use them on all of my long guns and haven't had any problems. They are great at keeping scratches and dings to minimum when you are moving things around in your safe.

I'm using them in lieu of an actual gun case for my .22 rifles. They seem to work well.

I don't live in very humid conditions, however.

I don't see the point if you store your guns in a safe. I use a Golden Rod along with a Bullfrog emitter, and never have any rust on my guns despite living in a humid climate a rock's throw from the Cheseapeake Bay.

Besides, if you do encase all your guns in those sock jobs, you will probably be less likely go unwrap them and inspect them. At least without the socks you can see if a problem is starting to present itself.

However if the OP is not using a safe, I'd guess a silicone sock would be better than a standard gun case.
The gun case would do nothing to prevent damage from moisture, while the silicone sock might help deter rust.

Keep it off of the optics.

wow, this is bizzare !! i got one maybe a week ago from sportsmansguide , and not 10 minutes ago, i finally trojaned it around my beloved rem. 700 PSS with leupold MK 4 mil-dot and harris bipod (didn't say it was easy !). naturally, i had to fold up the bi-pods to get the sock around it, but the rifle won't fit in back my safe with the bi-pods folded in (i'm serious). so i had to drag it back inside and find closet space for it. not that any of this is pertinent to this thread......
anyway, it was my understanding that closed cases absorbed moisture, which is why i pulled my 700 out of one and put it in a gunsock.
