Ran Out of Reasons to Stay in California.

I'm outta here once I find a real job. After my trip from Korea, I have been enlightened.
Reasons to stay in California, according to some: fair weather, right to keep some arms but not bear arms, good looking women, good food, semi-free market economy.
Hong Kong: Semi-free market. Free market pre-1997. Decent weather except summer, AWESOME food. Pollution, but dude, I'm from Los Angeles. We INVENTED pollution.
Korea: Free but protectionist market. Cute lady cops. Low living expenses. BEST food I have had in my life.
Europe: right to keep but not bear arms...but heck, they have 18 round USP magazines, and we don't. Fair weather. Twoblink likes German girls in plaid skirts.
California takes the so-so aspects of liberal Europe with and some of the better elements of semi-fascist Asia.
Tennessee? Country music, Tamara, Runt, Oleg, etc.
Indy? Machine guns, suppressors, El Tejon (my hero!), and skunks.
Arizona? Machine guns, suppressors, skunks (OK to import but can't buy in state), and driving distance from people I care about in Socal.
Texas? Our Asian heroes of THR, and I can move in next to Dale.

My only regreat about leaving the People's Republic of California last summer to return to the United States is that I didn't do it years ago. I still miss the temperate climate of the San Francisco Bay area and the beaches, but my civil rights are far more important.

I have been mulling over a exodus from Kalifornia... but I haven't had the courage to do so.
Job is pretty good here, but everything from housing costs, taxes, and gun rights are downright depressing.

Damn, if we lose the Skunk, California will be less. I'm starting to think we should begin work on some big pitch to entice more shooters to this once great state. I couldn't blame anyone for hightail'n it outta here, been toying with the idea my ownself, but if the good folks keep leaving, this place is going to royally suck.
Skunkster, can we make it worth you while to stay? I would personally be able to contribute at least some ammo for your favorite shooter. I bet others would rally the cause as well.
Keep us posted.

I'm in Indiana and except for the weather:( , it aint too bad. The people are nice and I think I heard that Indiana has the most gun per capita of any state. Is that true? I can believe it because even people that I wouldn't expect have at least one gun tucked away somewhere.
My friend's dad has allways been kind of the typical dad, he never talked about guns and I got the impression that he was anti-gun (I don't know why I thought that) but he has had a BHP in his bedroom for 20 years! Several other people have come to light as being gun owners that I was surprised at.
Also we have very liberal gun control laws in this state (not the bad kind of liberal, hehe). We can own anything that anyone else can in the U.S.A. (I think). We can even have full auto, short bbl shotguns, and silencers if we pay the stamp fee. I know a guy that has all of the above and he is very happy with his full auto silenced MAC-10:D

That was definitely about 8 years too many. Left the occupied territories in the fall of 1999 before SB-23 became the law out there. Which was good, the majority of my collection at the time would've become illegal out there, since there was no way on Gawd's Green Earth I was gonna register them with the Kalifornia Department of Justice. (misnomer extraordinaire')
Florida has been wunnerful. Got my C&R FFL, piece of cake, CCW was just plain easy, and now I'm getting a NFA Krinkov.
If Skunkabilly moved here, we'd be hearing "Ree-Haw" all day and night long. :D

After getting back from Vietnam, I visited some friends in Los Angeles. Swam the length of their pool underwater, took a big breath after, and thought I'd been killed by that pollution. That was 33 years ago, never been back, and that totally killed any desire to "enjoy" CA. Things are worse now with people pollution and liberal pollution.... Too bad.

Tennessee? Country music, Tamara, Runt, Oleg, etc.
Keep in mind that we in the TFA have a rather large list of items we would like to get changed on our law books this year. Including giving us the ability to carry legally in places that sell alcohol for on-site comsumption. Lowering the cost of our carry permit to $50 for 4 years instead of the usual $115. Requirements of reciprocity to honor any State's CCW. Eliminate the $10 TICS fee so we'd be the same as NICS. Require firearms safety courses to be part of the high school curriculum.
Those are a few of the issues the TFA legislative action committee plans to address this year.

Well, depending on exactly when he bought, it is possible that the price has come down just a bit.
Everyone from TFL knows my miserable story.
Sacramento: major tech job market crash. We just gave wifes parents their only grand kid and they fawn all over him and reschedule major events in their life to spend time with him, etc. Wife says taking him away would near kill them. Sigh.
I would love to go to FL if I could find work - problem is I made so much stinkin money in the 90s that I did not go back to school and I had a long term high pay job and I let all my certifications expire. Now I am in a tight market with no certs and no degree - only experience. When we bought our house, she worked, I worked and I taught part time - benefits, money, time were in great supply. Now everything is turned on its ear.
I gotta just play "Wait and see" :banghead:

If Missouri ever passes CCW that would be perfect. I'd move over the Mississippi just across from Quincy and watch this place burn with a smile on my face.

Start your planning! The comments about Indiana and Kentucky are right on. I moved to Indiana from Colorado and found the following:
1. No home rule. This means that municipalities cannot enact taxing legislation.
2. Minimal restrictions on buying or owning guns.
3. Friendly people.
4. Living costs are moderate.
5. Taxes are low, with the exception of property taxes in certain very desirable suburbs of Indianapolis.
6. Some good places to shoot, but they will require a short drive. (Wildcat Valley, etc.)
FWIW....

Much of Tennessee is breath-takingly beautiful. Go to Nashville or better yet, East of it if you can. Knowxville is beautiful. Winters can be cold although this one isn't so bad (so far) and the humidity is something you will have to get used to or not. I live in KY, one state up. I lived in Tennessee for awhile and it was very nice.
Don't know diddily about Texas. I've driven through the Pan-handle about 10 times but I hardly think this is representative of the state as a whole. There were beetles there I could have strapped a saddle to and ridden!
Arizona has some nice places too. Depends on how much you like the desert. Most of CA is a desert. The Bay area being an exception to that. Too bad the liberals ruined it.
I'm a native Californian and I miss the West quite a bit from time to time. The smells of sage, mesquite, etc. I really miss the Sierra Mountains and the beach too. I stopped going to the beach too much since I got fried to a crackly crunch every week for 25 years and I'm probably going to develop Melanoma over it soon but you gotta admit, it sure is pretty.
Check the job situation out and then go for it. My wife was from KY, otherwise, I would have never have developed the inertia to clean out my house and garage to enable myself to move. IMO, you should just burn your garage down. It's way too much hassle to clean out!
Good Luck to you. I hate to say it but California is a lost cause unless they divide the State into 3's. If they left LA in the South and SF in the North. The Central part of the state is very conservative. It gets really hot in the valley but not bad overall.
May the fools who voted Gray Davis in choke on it. We were far better off in the 70's with his mentor, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown.

I've grown to quite like Indiana, but I've also found that to a large degree, everyplace is the same. I doubt that day-to-day life in Lafayette is much different from day-to-day life in any other medium-size college town.
There are a lot of places to shoot here, which is nice. And the gun laws are pretty minimal.
On the other hand, it is kinda flat. A few mountains would be nice.

I'm retiring, selling my house to a couple families of immigrants and taking everything to spend my retirement savings in free America. As I've said before, the first thing I will do is buy an AR-15 and fire it in the direction of Sacramento, but into a safe backstop of course.

I was a Marine brat, but spent over half my life in SoCal. Loved surfing, the honies, the parties, the climate, etc. Didn't love the crowds, bad vibes, prices, LAWS, etc. Met a wonderful lady (my fiancee now) and moved to Phoenix, AZ. Still have half my family in SoCal.
It's nice to be able to visit, but... especially now, I don't think I'd want to live there again. The prices for housing are way out of line. Even though the state is in a bit of a recession, the housing market is strong and going well and this is a good time to buy a home.
Bottom line is that you can find a great woman and good food pretty much anywhere near an urban area. You can't find good laws everywhere, however, and AZ has good ones. Weather out here can be challenging at times, especially without AC. As mentioned, in the northern or mountainous areas (Flagstaff, Prescott, etc) the weather is very nice. But I'll take the heat of the desert *any* day over temps in the 90s with correspondingly high humidity. I lived on the East Coast for prob. 8 yrs total - enough to know that humidity does NOT suit me. The constant sunshine here (no June Gloom haze like SoCal) is very nice and uplifting. If AZ only had an ocean (with waves), it would be a dream.
And yeah, it's very nice to go into a Class III dealer's place and drooool. Open carry is fine without a permit. CCWs are shall-issue. :D
(btw... there is a place in Scottsdale that rents out full auto G-36s ;) among others )

Well, a couple of straws:
Deborah Ortiz was campaigning door-to-door. She'd sent out flyers with a bunch of military-pattern rifles on a desk, with her sitting on the desk wearing a stern look. Bad, bad guns. Including the M1 Garand plainly visible.
She left a couple notes in our door, stating she'd return to meet us, even leaving a Deborah Ortiz coffee mug on our front steps, campaign flyer stuck inside.
Unfortunately, the next time she knocked, we were home. I asked her if she wouldn't mind posing for a picture with my wife and I. No problem, until I asked her if she minded holding my 2nd Amendment-guaranteed AK-47 during the photo. Buh-bye Deborah, too bad you didn't want to stay and chat...
The other straw was when we had not one, but two attempted break-ins at our house in Citrus Heights. Right around the same time as all the home invasion robberies over in Rancho Cordova. That's when I learned that the shucking of a 12-gauge 870 really does discourage people trying to pound through the front door. You think Sacramento County Sheriff's department would've responded in time to prevent the break-in otherwise? :fire:

My family moved here when I was 3 ... which means I've been here about 47 years too long ...
Well, maybe 30 years too long, as it wasn't a bad place in the late 60's/early 70's ...
I'm hoping to retire in another 2 years, which means my wife and I are starting to look around for a better state. We'd like to live in the country, ride our motorcycles 6-9 months out of the year, not have to shovel snow, have decent neighbors within a reasonable drive, have a garden, maintain a small dojo ... simple things ...
I'd like to be able to shoot on my property, and maybe visit a friendly range once in a while, just to keep my hand in somewhere inhabited by friendly folks that enjoy firearms & training ...
I definitely want to be off the main travel routes, so when the refugees from the west coast start arriving in numbers, I won't be too close ... :)

As long as you're looking, don't knock Louisiana... some of the best food in the country, great hunting, and a VERY gun-friendly state. When a serial rapist was "discovered" in Baton Rouge last year, within 24 hours Governor Foster was on Statewide TV telling women "You have the right to own a gun, we urge you to train and practice with it, and WE WILL GIVE YOU A CCW! Call us!" The blissninnies went ape, of course, but a fat lot he cared... :D (Also, don't let anyone tell you that the humidity is worse down here. It's no worse than Tennessee or Texas, I can tell you from personal experience! Only if you go down to the coast is it really bad.)
